Overview
Dental Assistant role at Indian Health Service. This position is posted to staff an ambulatory health care center and provides patient care support in collaboration with dentists.
Summary
Work in an ambulatory health care center. Work or learn to work closely with patients and dentists. Assist in care of patient's teeth, recordkeeping, appointment scheduling, taking x-rays.
Duties
Duties at the GS-02 level:
- Assist higher grade dental assistants in performing dental support work and related activities to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience required for performance at the next grade level.
Duties at grades GS-03 and GS-04 level:
- Act as receptionist and schedule patients for treatment.
- Be responsible for accurate recording of examination information and treatment performed.
- Keep all instruments sharpened and properly sterilized.
- Provide routine chair-side assistance. Expose, process, and mount intra- and extra-oral radiographs.
If selected at GS-02, the candidate gains experience toward the next level (GS-03) and toward the full performance level of GS-04.

Individual Occupational Requirements (GS-3 and above)
Certification to Administer Radiologic Procedures
Public Law 97-35 requires that radiologic procedures be performed by individuals who meet credentialing standards. The requirements include completion of an accredited program and certification as a radiographer. The following meet the basic requirements:
- Persons employed by the Federal Government prior to the regulation date who show evidence of current satisfactory performance or certification from a licensed practitioner.
- Persons first employed after the regulation date who have training or licensure evidence as determined by the agency.
Specialized Experience for GS-4 and above: Experience in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry or related experience.
Minimum Qualifications
- GS-02: Your resume must demonstrate at least 3 months of general experience relevant to the duties of this position.
- GS-03: Your resume must demonstrate at least 6 months of general experience relevant to the duties; examples include medical office support or dental office receptionist.
- GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate 1 year of experience, including at least 6 months general experience in scheduling and dental terminology, and 6 months of specialized dental assisting experience.

Education
- GS-2: Successful completion of high school education or equivalent.
- GS-3: (a) One-year dental assistant program or completion of a one-year dental hygiene program that included radiation-related coursework; (b) Practical nurse training approved by the appropriate accrediting body.
- GS-4: Two-year dental assistant or two-year dental hygiene program that includes relevant coursework.
