Responsibilities include oversight and direction for the emergency department and accountability for planning, directing, leading, and evaluating nursing care within the department. The role fosters an environment of collaboration and respect with all healthcare team members. Weekend and holiday coverage as needed is also a responsibility of this role. Related duties may be assigned as required. Operational Performance: Develop long-term unit staffing schedules and ensure adequate daily coverage in accordance with established staffing needs. Develop measures and monitor unit operational performance metrics inclusive of agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates. Oversee the daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training, and development of employees within the department. Responsible for ongoing quality and performance improvement processes related to the emergency department. Promote and support a collaborative team approach in providing care for all emergency department and trauma patients. Approach others in a tactful manner and treat others with respect and consideration. Support and interpret policies, procedures, and objectives of the organization. Monitor customer satisfaction scores and implement plans for improvement. Monitor patient volume, quality of care, and performance of staff to identify areas for improvement. Maintain a departmental dashboard that includes information and progress on people, service, quality, and leadership. Investigate patient, physician, and staff complaints and work to resolve concerns. Maintain required competencies for self and all employees within the department. Participate in a professional organization. Clinical Practice/Patient Care: Collaborate with nursing leadership to establish nursing care standards and evaluate staff compliance. Identify protocols affecting the patient population served and keep nursing staff informed. Demonstrate self-development and stay current on clinical management and healthcare topics. Maintain a safe and caring environment for patients, families, and staff conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance. Develop mechanisms to assess the environment for safety and care. Ensure equal access to treatment for all persons in need. Management: Participate in the overall planning process for the service. Conduct monthly meetings with the staff to address equipment, scheduling, goals, objectives, performance metrics, and improvement activities. Human Resource Development/Management: Educate and evaluate staff. Work with nursing leadership and human resources to counsel, discipline, and terminate staff as needed. Educate staff in new and existing department procedures and systems. Create and maintain an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff, and colleagues.
