To serve the public by the answering calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance and dispatching the appropriate personnel, equipment, and units in accordance with the location and nature of the call. Everyday people are calling 911 and you will have the potential to impact someone's life. In this position you will be working with a team of professionals, who are dedicated to the well being of the community. We are seeking flexible, multi-tasking individuals who can assess the priority for fire, police and emergency medical services through exceptional listening, and outside the box problem solving skills. Employees must be able to manage intense, stressful situations. You may be the most important person they will never see! Under general supervision, carries out full-performance level work in operating radio, CAD terminal and other communications equipment necessary for the efficiency and safety of emergency response personnel and general public. Receives, responds, transmits, answers and/or verifies messages and/or inquiries received via communications equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a 911 Shift Supervisor and in accordance with established rules and procedures. Must be able to work 12 hour shifts which include weekends and holidays. Required to work scheduled on call assignments scheduled as well as assigned overtime when necessary.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. This is not meant to replace the job description of the 911 Telecommunicator for the City of Rockford.

-Receives 911 calls for emergency and non-emergency situations on computerized telephone, cell phone, radio and other communicating systems; handles routine calls according to proper departmental policies and procedures.

-Dispatches emergency personnel and equipment according to procedures and in accordance with the nature and location of the emergency; makes radio and telephone notification to utilities, law enforcement agencies and other concerned parties.

-Provides EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) medical instructions via telephone to callers in medical emergencies.

-Uses standard operating procedures in dispatching calls for service to a large number of police units; determines channel to use, priority of calls and number of units to dispatch.

-Requires the ability to listen, communicate, and speak clearly enough to be understood while answering incoming radio, 911 and telephone calls.

-Possess the ability to receive, comprehend and promptly relay accurate information.

-Requires skill in making effective decisions under stressful conditions, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and remaining calm during emergency situations. Must be able to quickly exercise good judgment and make sound decisions to ensure personnel and public safety.

-Requires the ability to perform repetitive motion at a keyboard/console on an intermittent/regular basis for extended time periods per work shift.

Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Must be eighteen (18) years of age to apply. Past experience in high paced, stressful conditions is desirable. Must be able to type 45 words per minute.
