Overview
CNA is a premier provider of professional liability insurance. CNA Financial Lines has an opening for a Complex Claims Consultant handling Private D&O, Fiduciary and Employment Practice Liability (EPL) Claims. This individual will work with insureds, attorneys and brokers regarding the handling and disposition of mid to high severity claims. The role requires investigation of claims, coordination of discovery, and collaboration with defense counsel on litigation strategy. The position supports a hybrid work environment with preferred locations including Chicago, Glastonbury, Lake Mary, Wyomissing, and the NYC area, with consideration for candidates near any CNA location.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Manage an inventory of highly complex Financial Lines claims with large exposures, including verifying policy coverage, conducting investigations, developing resolution strategies, and authorizing disbursements within authority limits.
Provide exceptional customer service by managing all aspects of the claim, delivering timely updates, and responding promptly to inquiries.
Verify coverage and establish reserves by interpreting policy language and partnering with coverage counsel on complex matters; estimate claim valuation and follow claim handling protocols.
Lead focused investigations to determine compensability, liability and damages by gathering pertinent information and coordinating with applicable parties and experts.
Develop and execute claim resolution strategies in collaboration with internal and external partners; manage reserves, negotiate settlements, and oversee complex litigation with counsel when needed.
Establish and manage claim budgets; allocate resources efficiently and deliver high-quality service.
Identify subrogation, salvage opportunities or potential fraud and refer for further investigation as appropriate.
Maintain quality standards by ensuring compliance with company protocols, accurate documentation, and timely resolution and payment of claims.
Inform senior leadership of significant risks and losses through loss summaries and concise briefings.
Maintain subject matter expertise and ensure compliance with state/local regulatory requirements by staying current on commercial insurance laws and trends.
Mentor and train less experienced Claim Professionals when applicable.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the commercial insurance industry, products, policy language, coverage, and claim practices.
Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills; ability to convey complex information clearly.
Analytical mindset with critical thinking to resolve complex business problems and make sound decisions.
Proven time management and organizational skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Experience negotiating complex settlements and interpreting complex specialty insurance policies and coverage.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing workloads.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn business-related software.
Commitment to valuing diverse opinions and ideas.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience; JD preferred.
Typically a minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience in claim handling.
