Overview
The mission of George Washington's Mount Vernon is to preserve, restore, and manage the estate to the highest standards and to educate visitors worldwide about the life and legacies of George Washington. The Executive Director of Gardens and Landscapes is a new position designed to integrate key teams to develop a unified vision and strategy for continued growth and development. This leader will have the opportunity to design the new department, establishing structure, culture, collaboration, and a vision to support the ambitious work underway. The executive will work closely with the CEO, Senior Leadership team, and Board on key strategies and activities to support the department's work. The role also involves leading a major site planning process, collaborating with an international landscape architectural firm on a Comprehensive Landscape Master Plan to shape the future of the 450-acre estate, harmonizing historic preservation, landscape restoration, conservation, sustainability, and enhanced visitor experiences. Responsibilities
Provide strategic vision, planning, and management for the long-term health, sustainability, and interpretation of Mount Vernon\'s gardens and landscapes, including the historic core, an eighteenth-century farm, orchard, forests, gardens, greenhouses, support areas, and representative heritage resources. Design and develop the new Gardens and Landscapes department, establishing structure, culture, collaboration, and cross-team integration to align with Mount Vernon\'s mission and long-term master plans. Lead or oversee major projects and initiatives that translate the President & CEO\'s, Board\'s, and community goals into prioritized actions and programs. Collaborate with internal leaders and external partners to integrate horticultural, archaeological, sustainability, and preservation initiatives within cohesive master plans. Represent Mount Vernon\'s landscapes in strategic discussions with the CEO, Board, and stakeholders to ensure alignment with organizational strategies. Qualifications
Proven leadership experience in horticulture, landscape history, or landscape architecture, with a strong interest in historic preservation and cross-team collaboration. Experience aligning departmental goals with broader organizational strategies and translating goals into prioritized projects and activities that fulfill Mount Vernon\'s long-term vision. Ability to translate the President and CEO, Board, and community aims into actionable plans across departments, including integration of horticultural, archaeological, and sustainability initiatives. Compensation and How to Apply
Compensation anticipated to be between $175,000 and $225,000 annually, commensurate with experience; comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, a 403(b) plan with employer match, and HSA/FSA options.
