McWane Science Center is hiring: Cleaning Specialist in Birmingham

Overview

Join to apply for the Cleaning Specialist role at McWane Science Center. This is a 40‑hour‑per‑week position that performs cleaning and sanitation services to support daily operations in a cheerful and attentive manner.

Primary work schedule is Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM–6:00 PM or 10:00 AM–7:00 PM, with additional evening hours may be required occasionally.

Responsibilities

• Perform light and heavy cleaning services including mopping and vacuuming floors, emptying trash, and disinfecting/restocking restrooms and cleaning stations.
• Wipe down fixtures and exhibits, collect and transport recycling materials, and clean lunchrooms.
• Communicate maintenance issues to the supervisor to ensure timely resolution.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED/equivalent.
• 2 years of cleaning/maintenance experience in a public facility.
• Knowledge of and ability to properly use various cleaning tools and equipment to achieve results.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and holidays.
• Organized and efficient work habits.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
• Dependable and honest; team player.

Minimum Physical Qualifications

• Ability to access all areas of the museum, including stairs, catwalks and ladders, and to lock/unlock doors and heavy gates.
• Ability to climb 8–10 ft ladders, dust, pull pins, and operate various devices and hatches.
• Ability to use a fire extinguisher and communicate clearly with portable radios.
• Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, and be mobile for 6–8 hours per day.
• Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs; operate cleaning machinery such as buffers and vacuums.
• Visual and hearing acuity; exposure to chemicals, fumes and vapors encountered in cleaning duties.
