Job purpose

CHIME is seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead and manage the financial operations of CHIME and its related nonprofit entities. This strategic role is responsible for the overall integrity of financial information and systems, including the timely completion of audits and tax filings, oversight of the month-end close process, and day-to-day operations of the accounting and finance team.

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will supervise the Director of Finance and oversee departmental staffing, financial statements and analysis, budgeting, cash management, investment review, and compliance. The Controller will also serve as a key partner in financial planning, benchmarking, and process improvement, and will contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new programs and services.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in nonprofit financial management, GAAP compliance, audit coordination, and leadership, with a growth mindset and a commitment to excellence.

Duties and responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

Oversee the accounting and finance department to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Direct the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Maintain and enhance internal controls, financial policies, and procedures. Ensure proper tracking and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, and donations. Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures. Audit & Compliance

Lead the coordination of annual audits for CHIME and affiliated entities, ensuring a clean opinion. Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and ensure audit readiness. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS and state regulatory agencies. Tax & Regulatory Filings

Oversee the preparation and submission of federal and state tax filings, including Form 990, Form 1120, and other required documents. Ensure timely and accurate compliance with nonprofit regulatory requirements. Budgeting, Cash Management & Investments

Collaborate with senior leadership and budget owners to develop and monitor annual budgets and forecasts. Manage cash flow and liquidity to support operational needs and strategic initiatives. Review and monitor investment accounts in alignment with board-approved policies. Systems & Technology

Utilize and optimize accounting software systems, including Sage Intacct or similar platforms. Ensure data integrity and system efficiency across financial platforms. Strategic Collaboration & Leadership

Support the CFO in preparing board-level financial presentations and strategic planning. Serve as a counsel and partner in the provision and analysis of financial data. Coordinate risk management reviews with insurance brokers and manage insurance programs. Serve as the secondary liaison to the Finance Committee. Mentor and manage direct reports to achieve high levels of performance; provide coaching and performance appraisals. Train accounting and non-accounting staff on financial policies, procedures, and budget management. Leadership Competencies

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required (CPA strongly preferred). Minimum 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a nonprofit environment. Proven experience managing audits and coordinating tax filings. Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, including fund accounting and GAAP compliance. Proficiency in Sage Intacct or other accounting software platforms. Demonstrated leadership experience, including oversight of finance teams. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Preferred Attributes

This is a remote based position. Some travel will be required.
