The Town of Yarmouth is searching for a Heavy Truck Driver I to join their Highway Division team. This position works under the direct supervision of the Highway Operation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Heavy Truck Driver mows grass; trims shrubs; rakes and seeds. Installs and repairs drainage; completes brushing assignments. Performs minor maintenance on equipment used (i.e. greasing). Plows roads and sidewalks using heavy trucks, and shovels.
Performs manual work in the construction and maintenance of roads and sidewalks, including raking, tamping, and rolling blacktop; operates jackhammer, picks up debris, spreads loam and grass seed. Replaces and repairs sign poles. Operates and repairs chain saws. Picks up litter and deceased animals from roadways.
Supports the goals of the Highway Division, the Department of Public Works and the Town of Yarmouth through creative problem solving, decision making, a commitment to customer service, and by taking initiative to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department. Provides advice and support to supervisors. Performs similar or related work as situation dictates.
May perform laboring duties when not assigned to equipment operation.
Operates a variety of light and heavy motor equipment, including riding lawn mowers, woodchipper, dump trucks, snowplows, front end loaders, backhoes, catch basin cleaner, sweeper, road grader, vac truck, and associated power and hand tools; performs minor maintenance on equipment; digs holes by hand. In the winter, the team works to remove snow and ice by plowing, sanding, and salting roads and sidewalks; also patches potholes and cuts highway brush.
Participates in DPW related seminars that are offered on subjects such as confined space entry, road grading and chainsaw safety. May perform dispatch duties during emergency operations. Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.
ENVIRONMENT:Work is generally performed outdoors under variable weather conditions, near hazards associated with construction sites. Operates a variety of heavy trucks; also operates a variety of hand and power tools. Make occasional contact with other DPW divisions and the public. Errors could result in delay or loss of service, and personal injury to self and/or others, damage to equipment, and danger to public safety and health.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalency; One year experience in light equipment operation and truck driving; any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill: Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in the work performed. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions; ability to operate power hand tools, such as power lawn mowers, tampers, jackhammers, and similar equipment.
Knowledge of practices, materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads and sidewalks. Requires skill in the operation of equipment listed above.
Special Requirements:
Massachusetts Class B Driver's license with Air Brake Endorsement is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions for long periods of time. Ability to drive heavy trucks for long periods of time during all types of weather conditions. Incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear. The incumbent must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Must be able to conduct visual inspections while in the field.
