Overview
HUMAN RESOURCES AND PAYROLL SPECIALIST, School of Social Work, Administration Boston University is seeking a Human Resources and Payroll Specialist to oversee and manage all HR and payroll functions for the School. This position supports faculty, staff, and student employment needs and ensures the seamless execution of payroll and personnel operations. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration, the Payroll and HR Specialist is responsible for payroll processing, reconciliation, and analysis; managing personnel actions; and coordinating the annual performance evaluation and merit increase cycles. This position serves as a critical partner to managers and supervisors, offering guidance on position evaluations, staffing structures, and personnel budgeting. The Specialist also acts as the primary liaison with central Human Resources and Payroll offices, ensuring accuracy and consistency across all aspects of the employee lifecycle.
Responsibilities
Oversee and manage all HR and payroll functions for the School of Social Work. Perform payroll processing, reconciliation, and analysis. Manage personnel actions and coordinate annual performance evaluation and merit increase cycles. Advise managers and supervisors on position evaluations, staffing structures, and personnel budgeting. Serve as primary liaison with central Human Resources and Payroll offices to ensure accuracy across the employee lifecycle.
Qualifications
Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent work experience. 3–5 years relevant experience. Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to advise faculty and staff regarding HR, organizational, and administrative matters. Strong organizational and time management skills. High attention to detail and accuracy. Professionalism, diplomacy, creativity, and enthusiasm. Supervisory experience. Preferred Qualifications: BU or higher education experience; Master\'s degree; Knowledge of payroll systems and processes; Familiarity with BU\'s administrative systems, including SAP, and JobX; Higher education and/or unionized environment experience is a plus.
Additional Requirements
The HR and Payroll Specialist must manage University-imposed deadlines that affect all employees across the school. The ability to plan ahead, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines is essential. Strong skills in process management, data management, communication, organization, and analysis are required. Experience with SAP and SharePoint is preferred.
