Overview

Location: Bethesda, Maryland, United States of America Metrologist role within the NSWCCDs Fabrication Team at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock. This position requires the use of high precision measurement equipment (CMMs, laser trackers, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height/depth gauges, indicators, micrometers) and performing computerized spatial analysis. Responsibilities include calibrating equipment, measuring item geometry and spatial relationships, tolerance analysis, and providing a Tolerance Measurement Study upon completion. Will perform preventative and routine maintenance and calibration of measurement equipment as needed and issue calibrations. Employment details: Time Type: Full time. Minimum Clearance Required: Secret. Employee Type: Regular. Travel: Up to 10% (local).

Responsibilities Prepare measurement reports per customer specifications. Determine if first article parts are acceptable.

Implement new practices to promote part accuracy and proficiency, including new reporting templates or formats for documentation, reporting, and tracking of precision measurement activities.

Use Polyworks Metrology Software to inspect high-tolerance finished components designed with minimal fixturing.

Advise shop management, supervisors, and planners during planning and costing on difficulty, complexity, and potential issues in the inspection process.

Analyze and diagnose problems during inspection; use Polyworks or Spatial Analyzer to determine root causes and develop methods to prevent recurrence.

Perform Laser Tracker measurements with Polyworks according to Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices.

Adhere to Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices where applicable.

Design specialized tooling fixtures to support the production of complex machined components.

Apply knowledge of engineering disciplines in structural design, weld design materials applications, and prototype design; interpret complex drawings, sketches, and verbal communications.

Qualifications

Required:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience with high-precision measurement equipment (CMMs, laser trackers, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, micrometers) and performing computerized spatial analysis.

Knowledge of manufacturing trades and processes to contribute to engineering design and development.

Ability to collect and analyze data in test samples and fabrication mockups and apply data to future high-cost components and models.

Experience inspecting and dimensionally verifying components and models to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and control documents.

Experience generating and delivering measurement reports per customer specifications.

Thorough understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices, including NIST.

Ability to read and work from highly detailed drawings and specifications.

Willingness to learn, ask questions, and take initiative within safety and skills limitations.

Desired:

Working knowledge of machining and sheet metal processes.

Familiarity with NAVSEA, Navy, or other military fabrication standards.

Experience with PolyWorks and Spatial Analyzer.

Physical & Working Conditions Office, industrial, and construction settings; work involves standing, kneeling, or sitting in awkward positions. May lift up to 80 lbs. May involve ladders, scaffolds, trenches, bending, reaching, and stooping.

Working inside and outside; exposure to cold and hot weather; environments where ventilation or respirators may be necessary. Emphasis on safety and proper tool/equipment checks and safety of others.

Hazards include noise, electrical shock, wet surfaces, climbing; potential exposure to oils, solvents; occasional high work and confined spaces.

Pay Range:

This posting is for a position covered by the Service Contract Labor Standards (SCA). Pay and benefits meet or exceed the minimum wage in the applicable wage determination.
