Overview

The Senior Electrician provides skilled electrical maintenance to a variety of systems and equipment, including installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment such as lighting, motors, generators, controls, conduits, and wiring. This role may also lead or provide training and direction to less experienced electricians.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-call emergency response as needed.
  • Implement new electrical technologies such as automated control systems, LED lighting, and solar power.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of high- and low-voltage systems.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues and diagnose problems.
  • Oversee new projects and read/interpret blueprints, plans, and schematics.
  • Operate equipment such as bucket trucks, backhoes, and forklifts.
  • Use diagnostic equipment such as ammeters, ohmmeters, and thermography devices.
  • Monitor energy usage and source parts and materials.
  • Follow all safety regulations and participate in safety practices.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Formal training in electrical functions.
  • Six years of electrician experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.

Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements

  • Valid Journeyman Electrician certification.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record; must obtain state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge: The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70). Electrical theory (Ohm e2 e2 e2s Law, Kirchhoff e2 e2 e2s Law, etc.). Utility plant operations (e.g., water purification). Electrical and mechanical equipment/systems (gear boxes, motors, pumps, compressors). Occupational hazards and safety procedures. CMMS or similar systems for logging work and ordering materials. Mathematics, including algebra and geometry.
  • Skills: Using electrical tools with precision. Troubleshooting electrical systems and components. Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and schematics. Applying algebraic and geometric formulas in the electrical field. Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite). Organization, time management, and customer service. Effective oral and written communication.
  • Abilities: Think critically and analyze problems. Apply safety procedures consistently. Train and guide less experienced staff.
