Position Summary
High school head coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching positions. The head coach will stay current with sport-specific knowledge by reading literature and attending clinics and workshops. Responsibility for Rules and Regulations.
The head coach will study and understand the rules and regulations of the sport, the WIAA, Federal Way Public Schools, and the league. Program Promotion.
The head coach will promote the sport within the school and community. Scores and contest information will be reported to designated media and the league website after each contest. Program Organization.
The head coach will hold daily practices and work with the building athletic director to organize and schedule practices; determine the system of play for all teams in the program. Standard of Care.
Provide safety training to participants and assistant coaches; maintain attendance records; have working knowledge of basic athletic training skills; perform basic taping and first aid as needed. Professionalism.
Exercise good judgment, promote positive coaching behaviors, and contribute to student-athlete development, leadership, and teamwork in a calm, fair-minded manner. Sportsmanship and Ethics.
Model ethical behavior and good citizenship at all times, handling obstacles with grace and dignity. Supervision.
Responsible for participants from the time they report until they leave. Presentation of Rules/Regulations.
Explain eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code during the first week of practice. Attention to Eligibility Rules.
Ensure each participant completes eligibility before practice. Accident/Injury Procedure.
Call 911 for serious injuries; file an Accident Report within 24 hours; report emergencies to the building AD and director of athletics. Media Contact.
Report scores promptly to local media and league website; may use a designee but retains responsibility for reporting after home and selected away events. Meeting Attendance.
Attend required meetings with the district, league, and rules clinics as scheduled. Post-Season Awards Gathering.
Obtain approval for a post-season gathering through the building athletic director. Scheduling.
Provide scheduling recommendations; does not schedule own contests except for designated make-up contests. Responsibility for Playing Facility and Equipment.
Monitor facility condition, report safety concerns, and manage equipment and facilities for the program. Violations and Ejections Procedure.
Report violations/ejections to the appropriate administrators after contests. Program Cut and Awards Criteria.
Develop criteria for program cuts, school letters, and awards; obtain pre-approval and share criteria with participants and parents as required; maintain documentation of presentations. Seasonal Summary Sheet and Coach Evaluation Process.
Attend evaluation meeting with the building AD and present program inventory. Head Coach as Program Leader.
Meet with assistant coaches regularly to provide leadership and coordinate program goals; submit written goals and expectations annually. Camps and Clinics.
Obtain advance approval for camp/clinic programs involving FWPS players/coaches/facilities. Travel.
Obtain advance approval for travel; travel should align with policy, occur within the Northwest, and not cause school time lost. Financial and Equipment.
Manage equipment, supplies, inventory, and related finances as described below. Responsibility for Program Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory.
Complete annual inventory, retrieve equipment, submit fines, mark items, coordinate repairs, and ensure proper storage and cleaning of equipment/uniforms. Annual Budget Request.
Prepare/submit an annual budget request with current inventory by deadline. Fundraising Activities.
Seek advance approval for fundraising activities and complete required paperwork per district guidelines. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Three years of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience Proven training and experience in drills, safety, and skill application ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Five or more years of paid high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course (including passing the test) CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT 21 years of age or older Criminal background clearance First Aid and CPR certification (hands-on) Online Concussion Training (CT).
