POSITION SUMMARY : High school head coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching positions.

General

Professional Development and Leadership. Stay current with sport-specific literature and attend clinics and workshops.

Rules and Regulations. Study and understand the rules of the sport, WIAA, Federal Way Public Schools, and the league.

Program Promotion. Promote the sport within the school and community; report scores and contest information promptly.

Program Organization. Hold daily practices, coordinate with the building athletic director, and determine the system of play for the program.

Standard of Care. Provide safety training, maintain safety records, and have working knowledge of basic athletic training skills and first aid functions.

Professionalism. Exercise good judgment, mold student-athletes, teach basic skills and leadership, and maintain a calm, fair, positive approach.

Sportsmanship and Ethics. Model ethical behavior and good citizenship; handle obstacles with grace and dignity.

Administrative

Supervision. Responsible for participants from reporting time to departure.

Rules/Regulations presentation. Explain eligibility requirements and district regulations during the first week of practice.

Eligibility attention. Ensure participants complete eligibility processes before practice.

Accident/Injury Procedure. Call 911 for serious injuries; file an Accident Report within 24 hours; report emergencies immediately.

Media Contact. Report scores promptly to local media and league websites; delegate as needed but retain responsibility.

Meeting Attendance. Attend required meetings and clinics as scheduled.

Post-Season Awards. Coordinate post-season gathering with athletic director.

Scheduling. Make recommendations; do not schedule own contests except in specified make-up situations.

Facilities and Equipment. Monitor facilities and equipment; report safety concerns and manage care.

Violations and Ejections. Report incidents to appropriate administrators immediately after contests.

Seasonal Criteria. Develop/maintain cut criteria and awards; share criteria with participants and guardians; document attendance and dates.

Season Evaluation. Attend evaluation meetings and present program inventory.

Program Leadership. Lead with assistant coaches; submit annual program goals and expectations to the building athletic director.

Camps/Clinics. Seek approval for camps/clinics involving FWPS players/coaches/facilities.

Travel. Obtain advance approval for travel; ensure compliance with policy and minimize school time loss.

Financial and Equipment

Responsibilities for equipment, supplies, and inventory. Complete an annual inventory and related tasks: retrieve gear after season, submit fine lists, label items, repair and store equipment, and coordinate laundering.

Budget. Prepare/submit annual budget upon deadline with current inventory.

Fundraising. Obtain approval for fundraising activities and complete required paperwork per district guidelines.

Other Responsibilities

Performs other related duties as assigned to support student learning objectives.

Required Qualifications Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

Three years of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary/post-secondary athletics program or related club coaching experience.

Proven training and experience in drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills.

Additional Requirements

Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Five or more years of paid high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience or related club coaching experience.

Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course (including the test).

Condition of Employment

21 years of age or older.

Criminal background clearance.

First Aid and CPR certification (hands-on).

League and WIAA rules, NFHS sport-specific rules, record keeping, and school board policies.

Ability to organize and oversee a sport-specific athletics program at all levels; work independently and pay attention to detail.

Communication, safety practices, customer relations, teamwork, confidentiality, and community relations.

Culture and Equity Knowledge/awareness of cultural identity and promoting cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons; align with the district’s equity commitment.

Physical Demands The job requires sitting, standing, walking, handling, reaching, talking, and occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity for close work and focus is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made.

Work Schedule Varies – work days depend on the sport schedule.

Reporting Relationship Reports to and is evaluated by the Building Athletic Director.
