Application Deadline: September 18, 2025 Compensation Details: Full Pay Range 16.25 - 22.75 Location: Boulder, CO Job Description Summary: Swimming Teach various levels of swimming, evaluate and communicate swimmers progress with the parents. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, possess strong communication skills and be in good physical condition. Available shifts are variable and flexible; weekday, afternoon and weekend availability is preferred but not required. Swim Instructors may work at any of the following locations: East Boulder Community Center, North Boulder Recreation Center, South Boulder Recreation Center, Scott Carpenter Pool, Spruce Pool. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Instructs children, youth and/or adults in learn-to-swim skills and techniques. Tests and evaluates class participants. Enforces rules, regulations, and policies; maintains safety, order and discipline of participants, and/or players, and/or customers. Performs customer relations role which may include interacting with parents, participants, business or program partners, and/or city staff to provide information and solve problems. Works as part of a team, attending training, orientation and/or staff meeting as needed. Minimum Requirements: Ability to keep accurate records, organize information, and follow established procedures. Ability to be available and willing to work scheduled hours. Ability to demonstrate a clean and neat appearance. Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills. Ability to demonstrate swimming skills at the standard for the American Red Cross learn to swim program. Ability to organize information and follow established procedures. Ability to work well with children, youth and adults. Ability, interest, and desire to provide excellent customer service. Ability to attend required staff meetings and trainings. Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make judgements related to safety. Ability to stay actively engaged and assist with cuing of swimming skills. Knowledge and strong understanding of basic swim and stroke skills with the ability to provide coaching feedback to participants while ensuring proper class management tactics. Knowledge and understanding to observe participant behavior and monitor exertion levels. Skills in tactful and effective communication. Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history. Preferred Requirements: One to two (1-2) years swim instruction experience. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or equivalent swim instruction certification. Required Education and Experience: One to two (1-2) years of experience participating in or coaching in a swimming program or related experience. Previous experience working with children and/or teens. Supervision: Supervision Received: Water Safety Program Lead, Aquatics Lead Supervisor Supervision Exercised: None Working Conditions and Requirements: Physical and mental effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permit the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Ability to lift and carry up to 45 lbs. Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Physical ability to stand, walk, and kneel; hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Working environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Requires schedule flexibility, occasionally working nights and weekends. May work in both indoor and outdoor environments that are oftentimes impacted by weather and at times, unpredictable conditions. Machines and equipment used: Frequently uses various fitness and/or sports equipment as well as occasionally standard office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators and copy/fax machines.
