Job Description Description: Incorporated in 1955 and encompassing more than 454 acres, the Mt. Prospect Park District provides outstanding recreational programs, events, parks, facilities and services. With seven primary facilities and 27 neighborhood parks, the Park District is an integral part of a thriving multi-generational community. District open space includes two outdoor pools, biking and walking paths, a dog park and sizable space for outdoor athletic programming. The District covers over 11 square miles and serves a region of over a quarter million residents in Mount Prospect and surrounding communities.

The Mt. Prospect Park District is searching for a Youth Basketball Referee who will be responsible for the officiating of youth basketball games as assigned. The Youth Basketball Referee is a part-time position. Youth Basketball games will begin at the beginning of December and end in mid-March. Hours will be on the weekend (mostly Saturdays with select Sundays), at either the RecPlex or Central Community Center. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age and able to successfully pass a criminal background check. The starting pay for the part-time Youth Basketball Referee is $18.00 per hour, depending on qualifications. Additionally, we offer benefits for park district facility and programming usage. Requirements:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Report final game results and keep the official score and time of the contest.

Report to the game site at least 15 minutes before assigned game time.

Conduct a pre-game facility inspection and report any unsafe conditions to the supervisor immediately.

File written reports of any misconduct from players or coaches during or after a contest.

Complete necessary paperwork for any injuries that occur during games.

Find an approved (by league administrators) replacement if unable to work an assigned game. If a replacement cannot be found they must report to the assigned game site. Failure to show for a game may result in termination of employment with the District. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the Basketball Referee position.

Responsible for using Park District software to clock in and out of work, as referees are paid on a per hour basis.

Attend necessary staff meetings.

Follow all Park District rules and policies.

SECONDARY DUTIES: Additional functions as assigned which may be considered essential.

Responsible for all other duties as assigned by the Athletics Supervisor, Athletics Manager, Superintendent of Recreation, Director of Recreation, and/or the Executive Director. However, in an emergency, perform all other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 16 years of age.

Must have a complete understanding and knowledge of the rules of basketball.

Must wear the appropriate provided referee uniform.

Must be able to communicate effectively with others to allow for the coordination of work, safety, and in emergency situations if needed.

Must be able to demonstrate good judgment and common sense. Must be able to recognize unsafe conditions and emergencies and respond accordingly.

Work will be performed in an indoor recreational facility. This position will involve standing, walking, running, stooping, lifting, and carrying. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and keep up with the flow of the activity being officiated. Must be able to lift 20+ pounds as needed.

Must present themselves in a professional manner at all times. Each and every time a referee steps out onto a playing field or court, they are representing the Park District. A referee must display a positive attitude in regards to the park district, its employees and programs.

Must be reliable and report to work when scheduled. If unable to work, must find an approved replacement.

Must be able to abide by the guidelines and policies set by the Park District.

Mt. Prospect Park District Officials Code of Ethics: ? The purpose of this code of ethics is to establish guidelines for ethical standards of conduct for all officials. ? The Mt. Prospect Park District has employed you to assist them in providing recreational and competitive athletics for the youth participants of the community. ? An official must be independent, impartial and responsible to the people they serve. ? An official must devote time, thought and study to rules of the game and the mechanics necessary to carry out these rules so that one may render effective and creditable service in a fair and unbiased manner. ? An official must constantly uphold the honor and dignity of the avocation in all personal conduct and relations with the athletes, coaches and league coordinators. ? An official will be prepared both physically and mentally, dress according to expectations and maintain a proper appearance that is befitting the importance of the game. ? An official must remember and recognize that it is important to honor contracts regardless of possible inconvenience or financial loss. ? Every member of the officiating profession carries a responsibility to act in a manner becoming a professional person. The conduct of any official influences the attitude of the public toward the profession in general as well as toward the official in particular.

Due to the needs of the Park District, evening and weekend hours may be required. Your work schedule may vary.
