Job Opportunity At The Office Of The State Public Defender

The Colorado Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) is looking for professionals dedicated to furthering its mission and demonstrating compassion in their service to clients. The Office Head is responsible for the overall management of a regional trial office, including administrative and personnel management; supervision of staff; training; caseload management; ethics and all areas necessary to secure the best possible representation for clients. The Office Head carries a reduced caseload as set forth by the State Public Defender. Responsibilities include performing supervisory duties for all Office staff; reviewing, updating and developing Office procedures; acting as a representative of the Office to the courts and other agencies; providing oversight to the training and orientation of Office staff; developing training presentations and materials; managing caseloads; serving as a resource to assist less experienced lawyers in resolving complex ethical matters; attending management conferences; conducting special projects; serving on committees and work groups; managing a small caseload; handling all aspects of a case; maintaining client contact; documenting client files; advising clients of charges and possible penalties; handling difficult situations; serving as an expert in formulating and litigating complex defenses; pursuing advantageous plea agreements; writing motions, briefs and pleadings; presenting strong sentencing arguments; advising clients of appellate and post-conviction rights; communicating with opposing counsel and judges; demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and performing other duties as assigned. Minimum qualifications include a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an ABA accredited law school; license to practice law in the State of Colorado; a minimum of eight years' practice as an attorney litigating a full range of felony cases; and at least one year of experience with the Colorado State Public Defender, with preference for system supervisory experience. Preferred qualifications include prior experience as an attorney with the Colorado State Public Defender; management or supervisory experience; and experience advancing a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion. Knowledge, skills and abilities include advanced knowledge of criminal law, defense strategies and client advocacy; ethical obligations in accordance with the Rules of Professional Conduct; substantive criminal defense principles and techniques; solid understanding of criminal justice practices; high degree of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality; excellent communication skills; ability to develop collaborative relationships; ability to analyze legal matters and propose solutions; problem-solving skills; and research skills.
