At Bismarck State College, we pride ourselves on making every cent count. We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Accountant to join our team and contribute to our continued success.
The Accountant will perform a variety of professional accounting-related duties, especially for the Continuing Education Department. The role includes preparing various reports, handling departmental accounting, grant and project accounting, fixed assets, inventory management, accounts payable and receivable processing, payroll, contract processing, and more. The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and a love for crunching numbers.

Key Responsibilities:
- General Ledger Closing and Control
- Maintain the general ledger system to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Compile and analyze financial information to prepare necessary entries to general ledger accounts, resulting in accurate financial reports.
- Coordinate the development of the general ledger and other financial systems with other accounting services staff to ensure effective utilization of funds, budgets, and projects.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts, including funds, projects, and bank statements, on a timely basis.
- Work with budget owners to develop, analyze, and report budget-to-actual statistics.
- Grant and Campus Accounting
- Ensure proper maintenance, tracking, and reporting of grants, collaborating with stakeholders to manage grants from an accounting and compliance standpoint.
- Prepare and/or review reports and documents that support the recording of extraordinary repairs transactions into the accounting records.
- Analyze fixed asset purchases and inventory evaluations, including receiving and disposal, and track capitalization costs related to campus assets.
- Campus Credit Card Administration
- Create, maintain, and upload allocation statements from cardholders.
- Ensure campus p-cards are properly set up, maintained, and canceled.
- Audit monthly credit card transactions, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
- Allocate p-card transactions for areas of responsibility.
- Procurement Process and Travel/Expense Management
- Analyze purchasing policies and procedures when entering purchase requisitions and track receiving reports.
- Review and analyze invoices for accurate allocation and data, ensuring proper approvals through an automated RFP system.
- Submit and/or audit campus travel and expense requests, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures before approving for payment.
- Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable
- Prepare and distribute invoices, record allocations, and manage collections.
- Process and review weekly payables, ensuring accurate and consistent allocation.
- Miscellaneous Duties
- Process contractual payroll orders and collaborate with the responsible department and payroll department for accurate payment.
- Provide accurate records retention and management.
- Offer back-up support, education, guidance, and training to team members as needed.
- Recommend improvements, adaptations, or revisions in the accounting system and procedures.
- Support innovation and creativity to enhance departmental and campus processes.
- Provide coordination for audits and support team activities during audits.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree with courses in accounting, business, banking, finance, or related field and two years of directly related accounting, bookkeeping, or budgeting experience.
- Knowledge of procedures and methods in large accounting systems.
- Good working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, and work independently with limited supervision.
- Excellent computer software skills - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Access), email and electronic calendar (Outlook) and excellent keyboarding skills.
- Demonstrated positive customer service skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to relate to people of varying ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to perform well under pressure while handling multiple job duties.
- Excellent organization skills and attention to detail and accuracy.
- More than two years of directly related work experience.
- Experience in Higher Education or State Government
- Certified Public Accountant.
