This position functions as a Communications Specialist within the Consumer Services Division. This is an in-office position in Raleigh, NC. The primary purpose of this position is to respond to questions and concerns from NC consumers who call the Consumer Service Division for assistance with their insurance products. This position requires an outgoing individual with excellent customer service skills who enjoys interacting with the public. This role requires broad knowledge of various lines of insurance and will answer questions related to homeowners, automobile, health, life insurance, disability, annuities, and other insurance product lines. This position serves as the first line of consumer contact within the Division and represents the Department in a professional manner while providing a high level of personalized customer service. Assistance to consumers may include instructions on filing a Request for Assistance Form or directing callers to other areas within the Department. The position will utilize an interpreter service to assist callers with limited English proficiency and will use phone systems or other data tracking mechanisms to track the nature of the call. Working knowledge of insurance principles and practices and North Carolina insurance laws and regulations. Working knowledge of insurance policies and coverages, legal processes, insurance-related court rulings, medical/health and automobile/damage terminology and costs. Ability to listen effectively and define problems. Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in determining when to refer calls to higher level staff. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with insurance company representatives and consumers, including those who are confused, frustrated, or irate. Bachelor's degree in business or economics or a related program from an accredited institution and one year of experience in insurance underwriting, claims, or policyholder service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
