Human Resources Analyst – Michigan State University College of Engineering

This position administers MSU’s Workers’ Compensation program, reviews claims and medical bills, consults with doctors, staff, and legal counsel to determine compensability, and represents MSU in Michigan's Workers’ Compensation Agency. Works closely with the LTD Vendor, employees, and departments to administer MSU’s Long Term Disability process.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Resolves questions concerning employment status, whether disability is work-related, dates and amounts of payment, reports to the proper government authority, and communications with legal counsel to determine compensability. (40%)
  • Reviews and analyzes Workers’ Compensation and LTD claims for validity. Prepares and submits weekly payroll and forwards claims to third-party vendor for payment on Workers’ Compensation. (30%)
  • Assists in defending MSU at Michigan Workers’ Compensation Agency vs employees who have been denied or are being represented. Works with legal counsel to review documents and previous/pending case law to strategize cases pending for trial. (10%)
  • Responsible for governmental reporting including MSU, State and Federal offices such as Medicare and OSHA. (10%)
  • Works with departments on safety and health in the workplace, including managing and analyzing data from bi-monthly, monthly, quarterly and yearly reports. (5%)
  • Assist employees by examining medical records for compliance with LTD, processing eligibility laws and guidelines. Maintains appropriate communication with employees, departments, the LTD plan administrator, and peers within confidentiality requirements. (5%)

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is fixed at $65,000 – $69,595. Final compensation will be determined based on relevant experience within this range.

Remote Work Capability

This position is based in East Lansing, Michigan, on the campus of Michigan State University. The university embraces flexible work options; this position allows for a hybrid schedule (if desired), with regular onsite work required 2-3 days per week. Work schedules are assessed for impact to the work outcomes of the individual, team, and department and must be pre-approved by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Human Resources Administration, Labor and Industrial Relations, or a related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible work experience in a comparable human resources field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Three to five years of experience in workers’ compensation or FMLA administration; working knowledge with Federal and State laws such as ADA, FMLA and/or Michigan Workers’ Disability Compensation Act.
