Job Title: Power Plant Mechanic

Summary About the Position: Performs as a journey level Power Plant Mechanic at a hydroelectric power project. Responsibilities include maintenance on general powerhouse mechanical equipment, conducting periodic and unscheduled maintenance and/or repair on equipment common to hydroelectric facilities, performing machine work, and various types of welding and cutting operations. Performs other support duties such as installing and repairing piping systems. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Power Plant Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform common duties of a journeyman mechanic which includes diagnosing, repairing, adjusting, maintaining, and lubricating bearings, gears, engines, compressors, and hydraulic equipment. Must have the ability to operate machine tools and equipment necessary to produce products within tolerances. Must be able to perform general machinery repair, dismantling, assembling and installing main and auxiliary machinery or hydraulic equipment. Work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble shooting Physical Effort: The incumbent must have physical endurance to work for prolonged periods in cramped, poorly accessible sites when repairing or servicing installed equipment. Physical effort requires prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting and carrying objects frequently weighing up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds. Machinist work requires acute dexterity. Working Conditions: Work is performed in the machine shop, in the powerhouse and other project structures and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, heights, oils, greases, confined areas, dust, dirt, water, heat or cold. Also may be exposed to odors, fumes and/or moving and energized equipment. Must wear appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing, and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements. Education Additional Information: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required. Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 1 year by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.
