The City of Kennewick is offering a seasonal lifeguard position at the City Pool located at 6th & Dayton/Kennewick, WA, WA. The hourly rate is between $17.50 and $18.50. This position is non-exempt and falls under the bargaining unit NC. The opening date is February 20, 2025. The job number is LIFEGUARD.2025.02 and is part of the Parks, Recreation & Facilities Non-Regular department. The lifeguard role involves ensuring the safety and well-being of patrons using the City of Kennewick's pool facility. This role includes monitoring pool activities, enforcing safety rules, providing assistance and first aid when needed, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. Lifeguards are key to preventing accidents and responding effectively in emergency situations, ensuring that pool visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience. Lifeguards are considered variable hour employees, and schedules will vary depending on the pool's needs throughout the season. The pool is open to the public from mid-June to mid-August, and during this time, lifeguards can expect to work between 25-40 hours per week, depending on availability and scheduling. Some lifeguards will be needed starting mid-May through the beginning of November in support of CIVIC Splash Pad operations and High School Swim Team practices and swim meets. These positions will typically range from 10-20 hours per week, depending on time of year and age restrictions when school is in session. The essential duties of this classification include maintaining surveillance and supervision of patrons in the facility; acting immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency; observing and enforcing rules and regulations; familiarizing oneself with the Emergency Action Plan; possessing in-water rescue skills, first aid skills, and CPR/AED skills; recognizing, minimizing, or eliminating dangers or hazards; learning and teaching the Tri-Cities Recreation Swim Program; presenting a professional appearance and using City of Kennewick issue clothing and equipment appropriately; exhibiting a professional and helpful attitude to patrons; working closely with other lifeguards, instructors, and pool staff to ensure smooth operations and effective communication; being punctual and prepared for the shift; swimming 100 yards prior to each shift; assisting in putting out or taking down equipment and pool covers; maintaining training by participating in in-service training and other training, meetings, or education that may be deemed necessary; and performing pool maintenance as needed, including routine, daily cleaning of locker areas, decks, and other facility areas as needed; pool vacuuming, hosing, and disinfecting decks as required. The minimum qualifications for this position include being 16 years of age or older and obtaining a valid Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid certification from one of the following certifying agencies prior to opening day: The American Red Cross, YMCA, Lifesaving Society, Ellis & Associates, Advanced Lifeguard Training International, or Starguard (Starfish Aquatics Institute). The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is available in-house to selected candidates on a first-come, first-served basis. Selected candidates who obtain their valid Lifeguarding, CPR, and First-Aid certifications from an outside approved certifying agency prior to opening day will be eligible for reimbursement. Desired qualifications include being a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certified and being bi-lingual.
