Posting expires: October 1, 2025 Salary: $44,286.17 - $55,357.71 General Description and Classification Standards: Monitors and protects the public health and waters of the State, by inspection of wastewater and stormwater systems and by remediation of sanitary sewer overflow sites for the City of Atlanta. This position visits sanitary overflow sites to perform site cleanup and restoration, ensuring proper compliance with City, State, and Federal water pollution control regulations; monitors operation and maintenance of system assets to improve overall wastewater system effectiveness; responds, completes and tracks customer requests as detailed on work orders prepared by supervisor; then processes the associated paperwork. This position is capable of carrying out most assignments typical of the position or specialty with limited guidance or review.This position would be considered attainable by any incumbent in a work group who demonstrates the necessary knowledge, ability, and performance.This team member’s position could be in a specialty work group or could be part of a general or specialized work team. Supervision Received: Works under general supervision. May work independently or with other skilled or semi-skilled workers with responsibility for completion of assigned tasks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Inspects sites, assets, easements, and right of ways related to wastewater and stormwater systems to ensure proper design, operations and maintenance. Visit locations in the service area including off-road easements and right of ways related to sanitary sewer spills to perform notification, remediation, restoration, and compliance tasks to protect the public health. Remediates spill sites to ensure proper cleanup and disposal of related sanitary debris by hand raking or picking up debris, spreading lime to disinfect areas, and removing any spill evidence to maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and rules associated with City, State, and Federal water pollution control regulations. Responds to and performs tasks for customer service requests and work orders as detailed from supervisors Contacts customers for customer service Contacts customers to investigate their requests, perform site visits and remediation. Completes paperwork for service requests, work orders and prepares written reports. Prioritizes the workload and work route to ensure tasks can be completed efficiently. Evaluates safety issues related to work and equipment to ensure all safety procedures are followed Visits historical problem sites due to precipitation throughout the City for site inspection, reports and actions. Monitors status of service requests and work orders until resolved; Forwards updates to supervisor and stakeholders for information and resolution as needed. Protects and monitors the water ways of the State, by inspecting creeks and storm water drainage systems within the City of Atlanta. Protects the City of Atlanta's domestic sanitary sewer system from illegal discharges and damage. Conducts sewer dye tests, sonar tests and visually monitors flow to make reports which evaluate the wastewater system. Observes and reports wastewater code enforcement issues from field operations knowledge to promote ordinance compliance. Follows and maintains awareness of City policies and procedures Drives and maintains a vehicle, with an inventory of equipment and supplies. Maintains valid driver’s license and complies with City vehicle policies. May perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge of time management Knowledge of gravity pipeline construction practices and terminology; knowledge of wastewater terminology. Skill in operating a motor vehicle. Skill in operating a computer and software. Skill in operating tools and field equipment such as sewer cameras, smart phones, GPS equipment, etc. Skills in problem solving. Ability to perform physical labor; including lifting 20 pounds, using a hand rake and shovel. Ability to withstand extreme temperature and environment changes in physically demanding conditions. Ability to adapt to changes in the field and make independent judgments in absence of supervision. Ability to speak clearly and concisely in public and among staff members. Ability to complete written reports Ability to work overtime on weekdays and weekends Ability to operate company vehicles. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience - High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in industrial waste inspections, wastewater monitoring, and/or compliance activities. Licensures and Certifications - Valid State of Georgia Driver's License required. GACE (Georgia Association of Code Enforcement Officials) certification or the ability to obtain one. Wastewater Laboratory Analyst certification and/or Wastewater Operator certification are desirable. Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission Level II, National Green Infrastructure Certification Program, Citation book, Code of Enforcement certification/badge, Pollution certification, Environmental Science certification. Preferred Requirements – Associate’s degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or one of the Earth Sciences and five (5) years of experience in industrial waste inspections, wastewater monitoring, and/or compliance activities. Work Environment: Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions are associated with the job. Lifting Requirements: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
