Overview
The Virginia Veterinary Center in Short Pump, VA is hiring a full-time Veterinary Assistant to join our ER team. This position is on our overnight team, 7pm – 7am. A shift differential is offered for staff working the overnight shift.
Position Overview
- The Veterinary Assistant carries out assigned duties and is adaptable to changes in the work pattern. Responsibilities include patient care and treatment, client service, and hospital cleanliness.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct triages and physical assessments on incoming patients to prioritize clinical condition and determine stability for immediate vs. non-emergent care.
- Understand common emergencies and appropriate action steps during initial patient presentation.
- Recognize and facilitate care for critical patients in a timely manner during triage; communicate and obtain approval for Critical Care forms.
- Communicate with clients to obtain medical histories of patients’ health and presenting complaints.
- Provide excellent client service and patient care at all times; maintain ongoing communication with owners throughout their visit.
- Understand normal vs. abnormal vital sign parameters and alert appropriate team members to decompensation in hospitalized or outpatient patients.
- Assist licensed technicians with outpatient procedures between triages, such as diagnostics, subcutaneous fluid therapy, and medication administration.
- Assist in initial hospitalization of patients and program hourly treatments while documenting treatment sheets in the Practice Management Software.
- Restrain patients for diagnostic testing and physical examinations.
- Complete Client Service Representative training to assist with client check-in/check-out, payments, and phones.
- Adhere to guidance and delegation from Licensed Staff (DVMs and LVTs).
Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 months of kennel work or previous veterinary assistant experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with clients and team members.
- Ability to work in a team environment, take direction, and assist other medical team members.
- Strong work ethic with a positive attitude; ability to multitask and work under pressure.
- Flexibility and adaptability to new situations; maintain honesty and integrity at all times.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull above 50 lbs and stand for prolonged periods.
Based on employee interest, Veterinary Assistant Certification and/or Licensed Veterinary Technician Program financial assistance may be available.
Shift Details
- Overnight shift – 7pm to 7am
- Rotating weekend coverage as needed
- Holiday coverage as needed (some holidays required, not all)
Compensation
- Based on experience and skill set. Starting at $20/hr, plus a $3/hr overnight shift differential.
