Lead UPS/Battery Technician

The Lead UPS/Battery Technician is the on-site coordinator and crew supervisor for all UPS and Battery work. This role involves coordinating the scheduling and execution of Preventative, Predictive, and Corrective Maintenance, as well as Warranty work. The Lead Technician will split their time between administrative tasks such as planning, scheduling, and documenting work, and field time with the crews performing the work. They will act as the first line of supervision to the UPS and Battery crews.

The Lead Technician works with UPS and Battery crews to ensure maintenance is completed safely, on schedule, and within the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. Duties include:

  • Inspecting power electronic systems and their associated controls, including UPS systems and static transfer switches. Inspections include Initial, In-process, Visual Condition, and Final Inspections, Maintenance Operational Checks, and Failure Analysis.
  • Certifying that systems and components adhere to quality standards established by applicable codes, publications, checklists, and specifications.
  • Reviewing and checking system drawings and specifications for accuracy and completeness. Determining maintenance and inspection requirements, and compliance with technical standards. Resolving discrepancies between recorded and actual system components by research with the manufacturer or by physical inspection.
  • Providing technical assistance and expertise on power electronic devices to clients and engineers. Participating in inspections, technical assistance, maintenance assistance, and instruction of site personnel and engineers.
  • Organizing resources and assisting Battery Technicians involved in the maintenance, installation, and inspection of Vented Wet Cell and VRLA batteries and related components.
  • Inspecting battery charging and monitoring equipment to ensure they are operating correctly.
  • Maintaining operating service records for batteries.
  • Recommending additional maintenance requirements and/or battery replacement based on Preventative Maintenance findings.
  • Occasionally assigned together duties for training purposes and/or to meet facility work requirements or emergencies.

Examples of Battery Duties include maintaining, inspecting, installing, and cleaning batteries and terminals; taking voltage, resistance, and specific gravity readings; filling batteries with water; recharging, removing, and replacing batteries; installing inter-cell connecting straps; performing discharge tests on battery strings; keeping routine battery service records and logs; and participating in the training of Battery Technicians.

  • Digital Multi-meter
  • Power Analyzer
  • Infrared Camera
  • Digital Camera
  • Insulation Test Equipment
  • EMI/EMF Meters
  • Battery Test Equipment (Alber/Midtronics)
  • Oscilloscope

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED + 7 years experience
  • Must be able to achieve and maintain Top Secret/ SCI security clearance.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex technical instructions, plans, blueprints, and schematic diagrams.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, maintenance practices, maintenance and supply procedures, and quality control procedures.
  • Use of a laptop computer, various software packages, and other electronic communication devices will be required.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex electrical systems, perform damage assessments, estimate maintenance, parts, and manpower requirements, diagnose malfunctions, and employ testing and inspection techniques.

Abilities:

  • Lifts at least 100 pounds at one time and 60 pounds for an extended period of time.
  • Relocates a 12-foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and all types of ladders.
  • Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls, and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possesses good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  • Recognizes when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
  • Applies general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Combines pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions.
  • Sees details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Listens to and understands information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
