Job Responsibilities
** This position is referral bonus eligible **
Kent County Department of Public Works is seeking a Transfer Station Operator. This individual will work primarily at the North Kent Transfer Station in Rockford, MI, and may be required to fill in at the Waste-to-Energy Facility in Grand Rapids, MI, or other Kent County Department of Public Works facilities on a very infrequent basis. Heavy equipment operating experience is required, and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required.
Primary responsibilities include the operation and daily maintenance of heavy equipment (front-end loader, switch tractor and material handler). Front end loaders are used to move, stack and load solid waste into open-top transfer trailers. A material handler is also used to load solid waste into an open top transfer trailer. Open top transfer trailers are spotted and moved throughout the site and building by the transfer station operators using a yard tractor or switch tractor.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for inspecting refuse brought to the facility to verify acceptability for disposal and that the loads are free of prohibited materials. Other duties include assisting waste haulers and the general public with unloading materials, directing traffic in and out of the facility, snow plowing, use of skid loader, grounds maintenance, assisting coworkers and keeping maintenance records. This position requires the ability to operate a roll-off truck both on and off public roads.
Truck driving workload can vary and be necessary, but the primary duties of the position are consistent with the description above.
Must be available to work a rotating shift which includes weekends and some holidays.

- High school graduate/equivalent or GED required.
- Must possess a valid and unrestricted Michigan Driver's License.
- Unrestricted Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with airbrake endorsement, or CDL Class A is preferred.
- Work experience in the operation of construction equipment and small ground equipment.
- Must have the ability to communicate with individuals from all backgrounds.
- Desire an individual with prior experience in the operation of equipment identified in this job posting.
