Field Technician I/Heavy Equipment Operator

Field Operations involves performing tasks away from the office to collect data, supervise colleagues or contractors, and complete environmental duties to meet project requirements. Work is typically issued as Field Work Orders. The Environmental Field Technician I conducts environmental remediation services, groundwater remediation, site investigations, and operates machinery and equipment. This position reports to the Field Operations Supervisor and is overseen by the Field Operations Manager. The role primarily works outdoors across all seasons and requires compliance with federal and state safety regulations, including OSHA standards.

The Environmental Field Technician I works in a team with a more senior technician, specialist, or project manager. Independent tasks may include the following responsibilities:

  • Groundwater Monitoring
  • Disposal
  • Tank Removals

Responsibilities

  • Complete Field Work Orders submitted by Project Managers and/or Prime Contractors (e.g., surveying, gauging).
  • Collect data and deliver it promptly to the appropriate parties (project manager, laboratory, prime contractor, shipping provider, etc.).
  • Sample groundwater and/or soil during various scopes of work.
  • Monitor well development, locating, and/or plugging.
  • Handle disposal activities for purge water and drill cuttings.
  • Complete surface restoration during site closure activities.
  • Calibrate and maintain field instruments (PID, FID, YSI, interface probes, pH/DO meters).
  • Mobilize and demobilize equipment and machinery (including basic inspections).
  • Operate and/or train to operate (Vacuum Extraction Rig & Probe Rig operators).
  • Operate and maintain small equipment (Bobcat, Forklift, etc.).
  • Operate excavators and other heavy equipment (Backhoe, Front End Loader, etc.).
  • Coordinate with the Field Operations Supervisor to order necessary field supplies.
  • Install new remediation equipment (pumps, tanks, hoses, fittings, etc.).
  • Install and operate remediation systems with basic oversight.
  • Perform regular operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical remediation systems.
  • General warehouse upkeep and maintenance.
  • Schedule vehicle maintenance (oil changes, tire replacement, alignments, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Detail-oriented with a strong understanding of systems and processes.
  • Valid Driver’s License; CDL preferred.
  • Operate excavator and heavy equipment.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Willingness to travel, work long shifts, and stay overnight away from home.
  • Team player with ability to work independently or in a group.
  • Ownership of responsibilities before, during, and after fieldwork.
  • General problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to changes in the work environment.
  • 1 to 3+ years of field experience (minimum).

Teamwork

  • Participate in team planning, status updates, and other meetings.
  • Participate in team functions as applicable.
  • Participate in Safety Training programs.

Client Relations

  • Represent the company in a positive way at all times.
  • Be courteous to others.
  • Direct client queries to project managers unless advised otherwise.

Work Environment

  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment.
  • Required travel can be up to 75% within the state of Oklahoma.

Licenses/Industry Standards

  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER with annual 8-hour refresher, or ability to obtain before hire date. (Training paid by the company.)
