LHH Recruitment Solutions is working with a law firm in New York City to find their next Accounting Manager. The Accounting Manager partners with the senior finance executive to manage key accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, client receipts, trust accounting, and partner compensation. The role blends strategic oversight with hands-on execution, focusing on process improvement, operational efficiency, and compliance. The Accounting Manager supervises staff across these areas and is responsible for coaching, performance management, and workflow optimization.

Work Arrangement

Hybrid schedule with an expectation of three days per week in the office.

Job Relationships

Collaborates with senior finance leadership and firm management; interacts regularly with partners, attorneys, and administrative teams.

Essential Job Functions

  • Partner with the senior finance executive to oversee and enhance the organization’s accounting operations.
  • Manage daily accounting activities including payables, client receipts, and trust account transactions, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with accounting staff to maintain accurate general ledger records and perform monthly reconciliations of bank and balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, ensure proper expense coding, and recommend adjustments as needed.
  • Oversee partner compensation accounting, including calculations, disbursements, and year-end allocations, ensuring transparency and accuracy.
  • Produce and distribute financial reports for leadership, including cash position updates, monthly summaries, and ad hoc reports.
  • Support the annual audit process and preparation of financial statements in coordination with external auditors.
  • Maintain relationships with banking institutions and resolve transactional or online banking issues.
  • Lead or contribute to finance-related projects focused on workflow improvements, automation, and system enhancements.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting, finance, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in professional services accounting, preferably within a legal or similar environment.
  • At least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.

Skills and Abilities

  • Detail-oriented, dependable, and collaborative with strong communication skills.
  • Deep understanding of accounting regulations relevant to professional services.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Effective change management and project leadership skills.

Technological Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with professional services accounting systems (e.g., Aderant, Elite, or similar) preferred.
  • Experience with Chrome River and Power BI.
  • Familiarity with billing and collections software/modules.

Compensation

Salary range: $170,000–$220,000, commensurate with experience, education, and industry background.
