Job Summary: MedStar Health is looking for a Unit Secretary to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Responsibilities
- Greets patients, visitors and physicians and provides appropriate assistance. Answers incoming telephone calls to the unit, relays information, and responds to patient call system requests and alarms. Relays messages and uses the appropriate phone for outages. Pages doctors and other disciplines. Monitors and responds to requests for unit access controls and facilitates downtime for MedConnect. Faxes orders to pharmacy and other appropriate areas. Transcribes orders to Kardex; prepares MAR and ensures downtime forms are complete and ready.
- Enters/updates unit charges into the computer (e.g., laboratory tests, dietary orders). Faxes physician paper orders to the Pharmacy. Performs basic equipment troubleshooting and coordinates with BioMed for repairs. Initiates and completes clerical functions related to patient admission, discharge, and transfer. Coordinates with the Resource nurse and primary nurses. Initiates and follows up on requests such as work orders.
- Files hard copies (face sheets and paper orders) in the appropriate patient medical chart. Maintains and thins patient charts, facilitates discharge charts to Health Information Management, and maintains unit supplies/equipment by monitoring inventory, ordering supplies, and logging activities. Maintains unit device inventories (e.g., telemetry boxes, staff phones, locators, handheld devices). Manages unit par items (e.g., O2 tanks, chair alarms) and uses the Logi-D supply system.
- Uses electronic systems appropriate for a unit secretary (MedConnect, Nurse Call, Teletracking, PeopleSoft, Office Depot). Enters/non-clinical orders (e.g., equipment). Determines new orders for nurse review and runs reports on quality indicators (e.g., fall risk, central lines, Foley catheters, flu vaccine). Enters patient-nurse and PCT assignments, ensures staff are logged in, answers consoles, and relays messages. Manages bed, transport, and item requests; assigns unit supplies for supervisor approval.
- Cross-covers for other nursing units and provides report to on-coming Unit Secretary or nursing staff. Coordinates with the cross-covering unit's Resource nurse. Maintains a clean, organized, and efficient workstation. Distributes patient mail, messages, flowers, etc., and clears unit hallways for pickup. Assists with orientation and training of new unit secretaries and maintains daily census/nursing assignment boards.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 6-12 months hospital/clerical experience with typing/computer keyboarding and medical terminology familiarity.
- May require up to 1 year of technical or specialized training (e.g., unit secretary training program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center).
Compensation
This position has a hiring range of $19.347 - $29.109
