Overview

Unit Secretary - Part-time (rotating schedule) role at MedStar Health (MedStar Washington Hospital Center). The Unit Secretary performs clerical support activities for a nursing unit to ensure the timely, efficient, and organized flow of operations for the assigned nursing station/area.

Primary Duties

  • Greets patients, visitors and/or physicians and provides appropriate assistance. Answers incoming telephone calls to the unit, relays information, responds to patient call system requests and alarms, relays messages, and pages doctors and other disciplines. Manages access controls for units, prepares for downtime, and handles orders and communications (e.g., faxes to pharmacy, dietary, radiology; transcribes orders to Kardex; prepares MAR; ensures downtime forms are complete).
  • Enters/updates unit charges (e.g., laboratory tests, dietary orders). Faxes physician orders to Pharmacy. Assists with basic equipment troubleshooting and coordinates with Biomed for repairs. Initiates and completes clerical functions related to admission, discharge, and transfer; coordinates with the Resource nurse and primary nurses; initiates follow-up on requests (e.g., work orders).
  • Maintains patient charts and unit supplies/equipment: files, thins charts, facilitates discharge charts to Health Information Management, monitors inventory, and manages unit device inventories and par items (e.g., O2 tanks, alarms). Uses the Logi-D supply system where applicable.
  • Uses electronic systems such as MedConnect, Nurse Call, Teletracking, PeopleSoft, and Office Depot. Manages non-clinical orders, staff assignments, bed and transport requests, and unit supply orders for supervisor approval. Runs quality indicator reports (e.g., fall risk, central lines, catheters, vaccines) as needed.
  • Provides cross-cover for other nursing units as assigned, maintains a clean and organized workstation, distributes patient mail and messages, supports new unit secretary orientation, maintains daily census/nursing assignment boards, and updates boards for physicians and staff.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 6-12 months hospital/clerical experience with typing/computer proficiency and medical terminology familiarity.
  • May require up to 1 year of technical or other specialized training, such as the unit secretary training program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

This position has a hiring range of $19.347 - $29.109.
