Responsibilities

  • Perform clerical duties related to patient admission, discharge, and documentation, prioritizing tasks based on department needs.
  • Greet patients and families, assisting with forms and paperwork.
  • Complete admission and discharge paperwork, and manage file processing.
  • Develop rapport and cooperative relationships with nursing and clinical staff; respond to healthcare providers' questions/requests.
  • Organize and file medical information appropriately.
  • Answer phones and call bells; communicate clearly with other units, physicians, and guests.
  • Safeguard sensitive medical information, maintaining confidentiality of data related to patients, clinicians, employees, and visitors.
  • Serve as a resource for troubleshooting computer and system issues within the department.
  • Maintain and stock clerical supplies and equipment.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to ensure departmental efficiency.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a secretarial or medical terminology course preferred.
  • Previous experience as a Nursing Unit Secretary in a hospital setting strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with medical vocabulary, hospital policies, and procedures.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and order entry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients and families, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Responsibility for accuracy and response times is essential.
