Responsibilities
- Perform clerical duties related to patient admission, discharge, and documentation, prioritizing tasks based on department needs.
- Greet patients and families, assisting with forms and paperwork.
- Complete admission and discharge paperwork, and manage file processing.
- Develop rapport and cooperative relationships with nursing and clinical staff; respond to healthcare providers' questions/requests.
- Organize and file medical information appropriately.
- Answer phones and call bells; communicate clearly with other units, physicians, and guests.
- Safeguard sensitive medical information, maintaining confidentiality of data related to patients, clinicians, employees, and visitors.
- Serve as a resource for troubleshooting computer and system issues within the department.
- Maintain and stock clerical supplies and equipment.
- Perform additional tasks as needed to ensure departmental efficiency.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a secretarial or medical terminology course preferred.
- Previous experience as a Nursing Unit Secretary in a hospital setting strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with medical vocabulary, hospital policies, and procedures.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and order entry.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with patients and families, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
- Responsibility for accuracy and response times is essential.
