Job Summary:
The Interpreter - American Sign Language (ASL) is a vital and supportive member of the PCSD team, working collaboratively with educators, support staff, and administration to achieve the shared goal of ensuring all students receive the education they need to succeed both today and tomorrow. This role is performed within a school environment, overseen by the Director of Student Supports, where teamwork and dedication to student success are paramount.

All staff are expected to fully adhere to the ethical standards set forth by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, continuously demonstrating a strong understanding of the tasks and responsibilities their roles require. Moreover, they must embody the core belief that every action we take is driven by a commitment to the best interests of our students.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Interpreter (Deaf Education)

Salary Schedule: State Based Plus Local Supplement

Department: Exceptional Students Education Program/School

Job Code: 116400

Reports To: Principal and Coordinator of ESEP

Work Schedule: 190 days/8 hr.

Grade/Level: N/A

FLSA: Exempt

Primary Function: Ability to provide instruction, assessing and encouraging student progress. Ability to manage the learning environment, complying with state and district level regulations and policies.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard

Hearing and speaking to exchange information

Seeing to read a variety of materials

Sitting for extended periods of time

Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to file materials

Qualifications:

A valid Georgia Teaching Certificate in assigned teaching field as required by the Professional Standards Commission.

Must possess and maintain valid and appropriate license, certificate and/or credentials as required for the position.

Essential Functions:

  1. Interpret teachers, classmates and other school personnel's language and discussion to select deaf/hard of hearing students.
  2. Translate deaf/hard of hearing students' language to teachers, classmates, and other school personnel.
  3. Accompany and assist deaf/hard of hearing students as necessary on field trips, co-curricular activities held during the school day, assemblies, etc.
  4. Substitute when necessary, in deaf/hard of hearing instructor's absence.
  5. Participate, as requested, in staff development activities, committee meetings, etc.
  6. Possess and maintain valid and appropriate license, certificate, and/or credential as required for this position.
  7. Follow work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
  8. Participate in training programs and apply concepts learned in the classroom to increase student learning.
  9. Review current developments, literature and technical source information related to job responsibilities.
  10. Ensure adherence to appropriate safety procedures.
  11. Follow federal and state laws, as well as Board policies.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee.
