Native American Cultural Studies Coordinator
Under the general direction of the Cultural Studies Office Chief, the Native American Cultural Studies Coordinator is an interdisciplinary team member who must establish and maintain professional working relationships with California’s Native American tribes, internal project delivery partners, regulatory agencies, local partners and interested parties involved with Caltrans' projects. The incumbent must be solution oriented and will need to investigate innovative solutions to meet deliverables.
This position requires strong oral and written skills with the ability to prepare technical reports as well as written and verbal correspondence. The role may require site visits, sometimes to remote areas, which may involve driving a personal or state vehicle on public roadways or uneven terrain.
The incumbent will perform a broad range of work concerning environmental issues related to protecting California's resources as related to transportation projects. The incumbent applies scientific methods and principles to analyze data on the effects of transportation projects on the environment; prepare and review CEQA/NEPA and other technical documents to determine effects; and implement mitigation strategies to lessen project impacts. The incumbent may have lead responsibility for a specific project, program function, or area of expertise; may mentor lower level staff; and may act as a consultant to other technical staff, management, and other agencies in those matters.

Working Conditions
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. The work environment includes both field and office settings. In the field, the incumbent may experience all climatic conditions, including rain and extreme heat. Site visits to project locations may require varying environmental conditions. Base operations are in a climate-controlled office; however, the building temperature may fluctuate. The incumbent may need to sit for extended periods while attending meetings, responding to electronic mail, or writing reports. The position involves keyboard/mouse use and a video display monitor.
This position may be eligible for telework at the department’s discretion and based on Caltrans policy. In-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. The selected candidate will need to report to headquarters as needed. Business travel may be required, and reimbursements depend on the employee’s designated headquarters location and applicable regulations or bargaining unit provisions. All commute expenses are the responsibility of the selected candidate.
