Overview

Custodians are responsible for keeping buildings clean and in an orderly condition. They perform heavy cleaning duties, such as washing walls and windows, shampooing rugs, cleaning floors, removing rubbish and performing routine maintenance activities. Custodians also notify management of repairs needed, tend to furnaces and boilers, and clean snow and other debris from sidewalks.

Responsibilities

• Replenish stock in bathrooms and clean restrooms; gather and empty trash; sweep, mop, vacuum; monitor building safety and security; dust as needed.
• Maintain a clean and tidy school environment and assist with moving heavy furniture to reach corners and hidden areas.
• Clean laboratory equipment and set up/teardown equipment for sporting events as required.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks and report repairs to management.

Skills and qualifications

• Reading comprehension and oral comprehension skills.
• Coordination and equipment selection skills.
• Ability to follow cleaning instructions and select proper tools for surfaces and fixtures.
• Manual dexterity, flexibility, and trunk strength for moving heavy items.

Working conditions

Most full-time custodians work 40 hours per week. Shifts are 1st and 2nd shift (6:00 AM–2:30 PM and 2:30 PM–11:00 PM) and may include evenings and weekends for events. Work is performed in well-lit, heated buildings; occasional outdoor work. Physical demands include standing for long periods, pushing and lifting heavy items, and exposure to noise, cleaning chemicals, and varying temperatures.
