Responsibilities
- Follows work schedules and temporary work schedules assigned by the Head Custodian and/or Principal of the school.
- Maintains assigned areas of the buildings and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat, clean, and safe; completes tasks outlined in the Custodial Services Plan for the building.
- Performs assignments ensuring all schools and district sites are safe to open and function when assigned, including working cooperatively with custodial employees during emergency operations.
- Cleans up body fluids from sick or injured persons following prescribed procedures.
- Removes snow and ice by shoveling, plowing, and/or sanding walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps.
- Inspects building security to ensure exit doors are operational and panic hardware works when the building is occupied.
- Reports damage, vandalism, or theft of equipment immediately.
- Serves in the school assigned, substituting in another school when necessary, and remains on school premises during assigned hours unless assigned to another site.
- Removes trash daily and complies with laws, regulations, and procedures for storage and disposal of trash and waste.
- Maintains an adequate supply of cleaning chemicals, requesting replacements in a timely fashion; stores supplies and chemicals safely.
- Moves furniture, equipment, supplies, and deliveries as required and requested.
- Performs specialized cleaning of facilities during summer months or when school is not in session.
- Participates in safety and Right To Know training.
- Maintains a safe working condition and operates all equipment necessary to carry out job functions safely.
- Makes recommendations for improvement in custodial operations.
- Displays a cooperative and pleasant attitude with staff, students, and visitors.
- Notifies and assists administration and emergency personnel in emergencies, following applicable policies; assists with evacuations and drills.
- Uses computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.
- Protects confidentiality of records and information; uses discretion within legal confines.
- Demonstrates professional behavior and work ethic; participates in in-service and required meetings.
- Adheres to federal statutes and regulations, state and district rules, and contractual obligations.
- Performs duties within the scope of employment as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds, Business Administrator, or designee, and as permitted by law.
- All other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively in English, at least at an eighth-grade level, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
- Hold a Black Seal License (preferred).
- Hold a valid driver’s license with no serious violations.
- Minimum of one year of previous work-related experience.
- Integrity and good moral character with initiative.
- Interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
- Aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
