Overview

This role is within the Housekeeping Services department and involves custodial work to maintain a safe and healthy environment for residents and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Performs moderately complex custodial work for assigned locations including office buildings and resident living units.
  • Cleans, dusts, disinfects, and sanitizes to maintain a safe environment.
  • Operates floor maintenance equipment (strippers, buffers, vacuums, extractors).
  • Requests and restocks supplies; assists in inspections of buildings and equipment for cleanliness and needed repairs.
  • Assists in minor building and equipment repairs and installations; trains other custodians as needed.
  • Maintains assigned custodial equipment and cleans exterior areas around buildings; clears trash and debris.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information and completes documentation accurately and timely; maintains inventory and equipment records.
  • Performs duties under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
  • Acts in a supporting role for disaster response/COOP as needed, which may require alternate shift patterns or different locations.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

  • Attend work regularly and adhere to shift schedules; may include rotating schedules, overtime, or on-call status to meet facility needs.
  • Perform custodial tasks with attention to quality: sweeping, mopping, dusting, window and fixture cleaning; ensure proper sanitization and disinfection per training.
  • Maintain floor care, restrooms, bedrooms, nurses’ stations, and isolation areas following established procedures.
  • Inspect buildings for cleanliness and needed repairs; perform minor maintenance as required.
  • Train and coach other custodians; provide training documentation as needed.
  • Complete accurate documentation; protect confidential information.
  • Support residents’ health and provide a safe environment for self, persons served, and others.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
  • Skill in using custodial equipment, materials, and safe handling of chemicals.
  • Skill in use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions; train others; supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds; stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and residents; work irregular hours.

Qualifications

Initial Screening Criteria

  • Graduation from standard senior high school or equivalent; or
  • Paid work experience in any field; or
  • Unpaid housekeeping/custodial service experience.

Preferred

Six months of experience in custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or other similar residential setting.

Registrations, Licensure, Certifications

Must possess a valid Texas driver's license or obtain it within 90 days after hire to drive a state vehicle. If an out-of-state license is held, provide a certified driving record as required by HHSC Fleet Management policy.

  • Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and HHSC LEIE).
  • Selective Service registration may apply for males 18-25.
  • All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and weekend/holiday work may be needed.
