Job Summary

Coach an assigned group of children (grades 1^st-5^th) emphasizing sport skill development, safety, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun. Teach young athletes the rules, regulations, strategies, equipment, fundamentals of the sport, and sportsmanship.

Must be available for practices during weekdays in the late afternoons/evenings and on Saturdays between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Most Elementary Coaches are assigned by their respective school from September through June (Early Start Schools: August through May) or for the duration of a specific sports season (Fall, Winter, or Spring). The Youth Sports Office also creates a pool of free agent coaches for applicants not assigned to a specific school.

Position Summary

• Attend all scheduled MANDATORY COACHES MEETING.
• Attend all scheduled practices and games.
• Be responsible for school uniforms and equipment.
• Provide a safe and fun environment for all student-athletes.
• Develop a weekly practice plan with the help of the school sports coordinator.
• Supervise players during practices and competitions.
• Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth; teach positive behaviors such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-respect.
• Ensure first aid supplies are available during practices and games.
• Notify the Youth Sports Office in advance of all forfeited contests.
• Assist with distributing game schedules, league rules, participation paperwork, and practice schedules to players and families.
• Submit paysheet and team roster to the Youth Sports Office as per schedule and deadlines.
• Follow concussion and head injury guidelines set by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and Statue 118.293.
• Evaluate player performance and provide constructive, motivating feedback.

Supervision Required

• Work under the direction of the School Principal and School Sport Coordinator at the assigned school.
• Coordinate with the MPS Recreation Department Youth Sports Office.

Job Requirements

• Behave and appear in a fair, consistent, and professional manner.
• Attend all MANDATORY meetings and trainings.
• Communicate instructions clearly to children.
• Participate interactively with diverse youth groups.
• Availability: Monday through Friday (times vary) for practices and Saturday games.

Preferred Experience

• NAYS Coaching Certification.
• Experience working with children from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience playing or coaching sports.
• Teaching certification.
• CPR, First Aid, AED certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Knowledge of sports rules and regulations.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with participants, parents, and staff.

Working Environment

This environment involves walking, climbing, standing for long periods, and exposure to loud noises in gyms or similar settings. Staff will supervise groups of children and adults, including assisting with accommodations for individuals with disabilities within training parameters.
