Job Summary

Coordinates Youth Sports Program at assigned school from September through June (Early Start Schools: August through May) in cooperation with MPS Recreation Department Youth Sports Office.

Most Traditional Middle School/K8 Sport Coordinators are assigned by their respective school, but the Youth Sports Office creates a pool of free agent sport coordinators when applicants apply online, not assigned to specific schools.

Position Summary

  • ADMINISTRATION
    • Serve as a liaison between the Youth Sport Office, your school, and league play sites.
    • Attend all scheduled Sports Coordination Meetings.
    • Read and understand the Youth Sports Opportunities Handbook.
    • Promote and develop school teams each season for 1st - 8th grade students.
    • Ensure first aid supplies are available during practices and games.
    • Register teams online at MilwaukeeRecreation.net by the deadline.
    • Submit entry fee payments to Youth Sports Office by the deadline.
    • Work with school administration to allocate, schedule, and permit practice space equitably.
    • Ensure practice schedules are on file for reference.
    • Inventory and monitor sports equipment needs and recommend repairs or replacements.
    • Submit paysheet according to schedule.
    • Notify the Youth Sports Office of all forfeited contests.
  • PARTICIPATION/ATHLETE
    • Collect, review, and retain Athlete Participation Forms (max 3 years).
    • Check player eligibility.
    • Submit team roster at least 1 week before the first game.
    • Ensure players have uniforms or T-shirts in school colors.
    • Schedule and facilitate parent/player meetings prior to seasons.
    • Coordinate student transportation if needed.
    • Notify players and parents of 'Return to Play' procedures for concussions.
    • Provide schedules, policies, and updates on forfeited contests.
  • COACHES
    • Recruit one coach per team.
    • Ensure attendance at Coaches Meetings.
    • Submit hiring paperwork at least 3 weeks prior; no work until approved.
    • Submit paysheets on schedule; only on-time submissions are processed.
    • Develop weekly practice plans and keep copies on file.

Supervision Required

  • Work under the direction of the School Principal and MPS Recreation Department Youth Sports Office.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to meet scheduling needs.
  • Professional conduct and appearance.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to attend all mandatory meetings and trainings.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in organizing or leading sports activities.
  • Ability to interact with diverse youth.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Effective communication with participants, parents, and staff.
  • Knowledge of sports rules and regulations.
  • Ability to foster positive relationships.
  • Ability to participate actively with youth.

Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods, and exposure to loud noises during gym activities. Staff will supervise children and adults, including assisting individuals with disabilities within provided training parameters.
