Seattle Public Utilities is seeking an experienced North Chief Warehouser to lead our critical warehouse operations in North Seattle at the North Operations Center (1318 N. 128th Street, Seattle, Washington). This is an on-site position requiring daily presence at our warehouse facilities to ensure smooth operations and effective team supervision.

As the North Chief Warehouser, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the supply chain that keeps our essential services running smoothly. Your leadership will directly impact on our ability to serve the community effectively, ensuring our field crews have the materials need when they need them. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate 3 Senior Warehousers and temporary staff
  • Conduct daily team meetings and safety briefings
  • Create work schedules and provide performance feedback
  • Coordinate cross-training to build team skills

DAILY WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS:

  • Oversee receiving, issuing, and storage at multiple facilities (NOC, Haller Lake, North Transfer Station, North Hazardous Household Waste facility, and satellite locations)
  • Maintain accurate inventory control and conduct regular cycle counts
  • Manage warehouse layout and organization systems
  • Coordinate with South Warehouse for material transfers and staffing support
  • Monitor and optimize warehouse space utilization

SAFETY & COMPLIANCE:

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials per regulations
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and address hazards
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and environmental regulations
  • Lead monthly safety meetings and training

EQUIPMENT & EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT:

  • Manage emergency supply containers for seismic preparedness
  • Operate and maintain North Warehouse forklift fleet (daily inspections, staff training, maintenance coordination)
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Participate in SPU emergency response activities
  • Ensure 24/7 readiness of emergency supplies

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Prepare timekeeping information and work activity reports
  • Develop and implement process improvements
  • Collaborate with Material Control team on vendor relationships
  • Perform hands-on warehouse duties during peak periods or staff shortages

Experience:Two years of increasingly responsible warehousing experience, including six months of lead or supervisory experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Work Requirements/Physical Demands:

This is an on-site position requiring daily presence at warehouse facilities. Must be able to:

  • Work at various North Seattle locations in all weather conditions
  • Lift up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Stand, walk, bend, and climb frequently
  • Operate forklifts and warehouse equipment
  • Handle hazardous materials safely
  • Work nights/weekends for emergencies as needed

Certification/License: A valid Washington State Driver's License

Desired Qualifications:

  • Union warehouse supervisory experience
  • Forklift operation experience strongly desired
  • Experience with warehouse management systems (WMS) and inventory control software
  • Experience in public sector or utility warehouse operations
  • Process improvement experience
  • Emergency response training or experience
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience managing multiple warehouse locations simultaneously

The selected candidate will be required to complete SPU forklift training and obtain SPU forklift certification within 60 days of employment.

The full salary range for this position is$43.16 - $50.10per hour.
