Travel Job Description American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for Med/Surg units at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg or ICU experience and BLS certification.
Responsibilities Work in a large hospital with multiple Med/Surg units specializing in trauma, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedics, and urology Patient populations include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedics, urology, and general Med/Surg cases Patient ratios typically 1:5-6 depending on the unit Specialized procedures and care may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, medication administration, trach care, PEG tube care, ostomy care, PCA pumps, and chemo administration (if certified) EMR system used is Cerner (preferred), with additional technology including Plum 360 IV pumps, Spacelabs monitors, and Omnicell for medication dispensing Telemetry monitoring is provided by techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours Shifts available are 7a-7p and 7p-7a, with every other weekend or four weekend days per month required Floating may be required to like units within Med/Surg, ICU, and ER holds as needed No on-call responsibilities Typical responsibilities include comprehensive patient care such as assessment, medication administration, wound care, and management of specialty devices (e.g., trach, chest tubes, drains) First-time travelers are welcome Team support includes CNAs, phlebotomy, IV/VAT teams, unit secretaries, charge nurse, and hospitalists RNs will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation Orientation includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit for new or returning travelers after 1 year away Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor holiday according to policy Scrub color is flexible; any color is permitted Parking available in the parking deck (levels 2-4) Time off requests are accepted up to 7 days, excluding specified blackout dates
Requirements Active AL or compact RN license required for consideration Minimum of 18 months recent experience in Med/Surg and/or ICU Experience with Cerner or Epic EMR systems required; Cerner specifically required for ICU-only backgrounds Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required Previous trauma, surgical, or specific unit experience may be required based on assigned unit Staff must be gone for at least 6 months before returning as a traveler Candidates living within a 60-mile radius are not eligible
