Job Description
The Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) functions under the direction of a licensed professional nurse. Under the supervision of the nurse, CNAs perform care appropriate to the patient population served and meet daily routine patient care needs. The CNA collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver care as outlined by the nurse. The CNA adheres to Centra's quality and service standards, creates and maintains a safe patient environment, and contributes to a healthy work environment. The CNA’s practice reflects the laws and regulations for a Certified Nurse Aide as outlined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Responsibilities
Provides and documents patient care under the direction of the registered or licensed practical nurse and as outlined in the plan of care, including activities of daily living and tasks such as meals, bathing, ambulating, toileting, turning and repositioning, and recording vital signs and intake/output.
Promotes patient comfort by responding to call lights and communicating observations or patient needs to the nursing staff.
Contributes to a safe and efficient admission, transfer, and discharge process.
Maintains patient rights to comfort, privacy, and dignity during care.
Maintains a clean and safe environment on the unit and in patient rooms to protect patients from harm.
Follows organizational policies and procedures in the delivery of care and interactions with other caregivers.
May handle medication delivered by Pharmacy or transport to an appropriate storage area or qualified staff (if applicable to work area).
Applies unit service excellence best practices when approaching patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.
Uses resources cost-effectively.
Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives and provides care consistent with regulatory and legal standards.
Practices Centra safety behaviors and engages in appropriate conflict resolution.
Engages in professional development through self-appraisal and continuing education as applicable.
Qualifications
Certifications and Licensures:
Must be certified as a Nurse Aide by the Virginia Department of Health Professions; AHA BLS CPR Certification.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
Experience:
One year of recent acute care experience required for certain roles; additional position-specific requirements apply for addendums (see addenda below).
Specialized Roles (Addenda)
Certified Nursing Aide – Resource Team / Centra Internal Travel Team:
REQUIRED: At least 1 year of recent acute care experience.
Certified Nursing Aide – Stroobants:
Under direct RN supervision, performs patient care and assists in cardiology monitoring; REQUIRED: 1 year of CNA experience and valid Virginia driver’s license; PREFERRED: Cardiology setting experience.
Certified Nursing Aide – Home Health:
Functions under supervision of RN/therapists; duties align with plan of care; REQUIRED: 1 year CNA experience and valid Virginia driver’s license; PREFERRED: Home health experience; Travel up to 100%.
Certified Nursing Aide - Hospice:
Under RN/therapist supervision; REQUIRED: 1 year CNA experience; PREFERRED: Hospice or homecare experience; Travel up to 100%.
