Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) – Job Description

The Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) functions under the direction of a licensed professional nurse.

CNAs perform patient‑focused care appropriate to the unit’s population and meet daily routine patient care needs.

Under the nurse’s supervision, CNAs collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to deliver care according to the unit care delivery model.

CNAs adhere to Centra’s best practices for quality and service, maintain a safe patient environment, and contribute to a healthy work environment.

All practice reflects the laws and regulations for a Certified Nurse Aide as outlined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Responsibilities

Provides and documents patient care under the direction of the registered or licensed practical nurse and as outlined in the plan of care.

This includes assisting with activities of daily living such as meals, bathing, ambulating, toileting, and turning/repositioning; checking and recording vital signs; and documenting intake and output.

Promotes patient comfort by answering call lights and communicating observations or patient needs to the nursing staff.

Contributes to a safe and efficient admission, transfer, and/or discharge process.

Maintains patient rights to comfort, privacy, and dignity during care provision.

Creates and maintains a clean and safe environment on the unit and within patient rooms and areas that protects patients from harm.

Follows organizational policies and procedures in care delivery and while interacting with other caregivers.

Handles medication delivered by the Pharmacy via the pneumatic tube system, transporting the medication to an appropriate storage area or to a qualified employee.

Applies unit service excellence best practices when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.

Uses resources such as time, people, and supplies cost‑effectively.

Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives, ensuring care is consistent with regulatory and legal expectations and standards.

Consistently practices Centra safety behaviors.

Handles conflict resolution opportunities in an appropriate, timely, and consistent manner.

Engages in professional development through self‑appraisal, earning academic credits, and attending educational programs.

System Auto‑Fills May perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Required Qualifications

Certified as a Nurse Aide by the Department of Health Professions of Virginia.

Completed AHA BLS CPR certification.

At least 1 year of recent acute care experience.

Valid Virginia driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Clinical background within a Cardiology setting.

Experience in Home Health or Hospice care.

Certified Nursing Aide – Resource Team / Centra Internal Travel Team Required: At least 1 year of recent acute care experience.

Certified Nursing Aide – Stroobants Under the direct supervision of the RN, the Stroobants Cardiology Certified Nursing Assistant performs patient care activities and other tasks as assigned to assist with primary care in the clinic.

The position also assists in the cardiac monitoring department, including monitor placement and patient education of the equipment.

Required: One year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant; Valid Virginia Driver’s License.

Preferred: Clinical background within a Cardiology setting.

Certified Nursing Aide – Home Health The Home Health Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) functions under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist, and Occupational Therapist.

A home health aide provides services ordered by the physician or allowed practitioner, consistent with state law and the HHA’s policies and procedures.

Required: At least one year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant; Valid Virginia Driver’s License.

Preferred: Experience in Home Health.

Travel is expected to be 100%.

Certified Nursing Aide – Hospice Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist, and Occupational Therapist.

Required: At least one year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Preferred: Experience in Hospice or Homecare.

Travel is expected to be 100%.
