Statewide Volunteer Firefighter (SVF) Specialist

The Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) administers and promotes sustainable retirement plans and provides services that our members value. PERA is the largest public pension plan in the State of Minnesota, serving current and former public employees from 2,100 governmental agencies. We pay monthly benefits to over 140,000 retirees, members who are disabled, and survivors of deceased members. Our 200,000 active members work in our parks, cities, counties, and schools across the state. The services they provide and the work they do make our communities better. PERA is currently seeking a Statewide Volunteer Firefighter (SVF) Specialist in the Account Information Management Division. This position administers PERA's SVF plan serving fire departments throughout Minnesota. Key responsibilities include: Ensure compliance with reporting standards, pension law, and tax law. Resolve issues and provides guidance to fire chiefs, governing body representatives, and other stakeholders regarding the program and reporting criteria. Collect, analyze and organize program activity data. This position is telework eligible and offers a hybrid work schedule which may include telework up to 50% of the scheduled workdays each month, based on agency and department needs and other dependencies. Scheduled in-office work days are at PERA's office building in St. Paul, Minnesota. Candidates located outside the state of Minnesota and more than 50 miles from PERA's St. Paul office are not eligible to telework and would be required to report to the office full-time. Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a minimum of one and one-half (1.5) years of technical, para-professional or professional experience. Experience must include: Ability to review inquires or requests and gather pertinent information and data from stakeholders. Ability to apply existing policies, procedures, and statutes to information and data in order to make and document determinations. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook sufficient to create correspondence, reports, spreadsheets and status reports for supervisor and organizational leaders, peers, stakeholders and other governmental organizations. Strong planning, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks, self-direct and function in a team environment. A bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance substitutes for six (6) months of experience. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of public pension plans or fire relief associations. Experience responding verbally or in writing to external stakeholder questions about complex benefit programs such as retirement, insurance, healthcare, public assistance, Social Security or Medicare. Experience administering policies, procedures, and systems to make benefit eligibility determinations. Experience working in a governmental or public sector environment. Physical Requirements: Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of movement is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
