Job Summary:
The Safety and Compliance Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety, health, and environmental (EHS) programs across our warehouses, parts & service, and manufacturing operations. This role ensures strict adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.), company policies, and industry best practices. The manager will foster a strong safety culture, mitigate risks, investigate incidents, and drive continuous improvement in EHS performance. Travel to various company sites and locations will be required.
Duties/Responsibilities: Program Development & Implementation:
Design, develop, and implement EHS policies, procedures, and programs tailored to the unique risks of warehouse, parts & service, and manufacturing environments. Establish and maintain a comprehensive EHS management system that promotes a proactive approach to safety. Develop and manage emergency response plans, including fire safety, hazardous material spills, and natural disasters.
Regulatory Compliance:
Stay current with all applicable local, state, and federal EHS regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, etc.) and ensure company compliance. Conduct regular audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, and work practices to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement. Prepare and submit all required EHS reports and documentation to regulatory agencies. Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory inspections and inquiries.
Risk Management & Incident Investigation:
Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify, evaluate, and prioritize potential EHS hazards. Develop and implement strategies and controls to mitigate identified risks. Lead and document incident/accident investigations, including root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions. Works with the Manager of Human Resources to reduce lost time and manage claims effectively.
Training & Education:
Develop, organize, and deliver engaging EHS training programs for all employees, including new hire orientation, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, hazardous communication, powered industrial trucks (PIT), and ergonomics. Promote a strong safety culture through regular communication, safety meetings, and employee engagement initiatives. Provide coaching and guidance to employees and management on EHS best practices.
Operational Integration & Support:
Collaborate closely with operations, production, parts, service, and maintenance teams to integrate safety measures into daily processes and procedures. Provide expert guidance on the safe use of equipment, machinery, and materials. Evaluate and recommend new safety equipment and technologies. Oversee the management of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with regulations.
Continuous Improvement:
Monitor EHS performance metrics, analyze trends, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Implement corrective actions and track their effectiveness. Participate in cross-functional teams to drive EHS excellence.
Travel:
Regular travel to various company locations, including warehouses, service centers, and manufacturing plants, to conduct audits, training, and investigations.
Required Skills/Abilities:
In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.). Strong understanding of risk assessment, hazard identification, and control methodologies. Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively train and educate diverse groups of employees. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and EHS management software. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Strong leadership and coaching abilities to influence a positive safety culture. Ability to travel frequently as required. Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Ability to perform inspections in various environments, including manufacturing floors, warehouses, and outdoor areas, which may involve climbing, bending, and working in various temperatures. Valid driver's license and ability to travel. Education and Experience:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. OSHA 30-hour certification (General Industry or Construction) required; OSHA 501/511 Trainer certification preferred. Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or similar are highly preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in EHS management within a manufacturing, warehouse, and/or parts & service environment. Proven track record of developing and implementing effective EHS programs and achieving compliance. Experience with DOT regulations related to fleet safety and transportation of goods is highly desirable.
