Overview
The current vacancy for Information Technology Specialist I/II is in the City's Information and Technology Department. This is a full-time and fully benefitted regular position working 40 hours per week. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill other Information Technology Specialist I/II vacancies in the City IT Department as well as the Santa Cruz Public Library System during the life of the list. The eligibility list established from this recruitment is valid for up to one year from the date established unless the list is extended or abolished by the Human Resources Director. Base pay range: $31.90/hr - $35.16/hr. The Information Technology Specialist I/II serves as a technical expert and provides computer hardware, software, peripheral and user support in a networked environment; analyzes, troubleshoots and maintains a complex network infrastructure connecting end-users in both local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN) in a varied environment of operating systems and suites; and performs other related duties as required. Our Information Technology Department focuses on delivering reliable, user-friendly technology solutions that empower City departments to serve residents effectively, with customer service, hands-on technical support, and strong partnerships across the organization. This role provides frontline technical support as part of the IT help desk and field support team; youll be the first point of contact for users experiencing computer, software, and network issues, providing remote assistance and onsite support. Responsibilities
Provide Level 1 and Level 2 support, install and configure hardware, troubleshoot desktop and mobile devices, support software applications, and assist users with technology challenges. Install, upgrade, troubleshoot and repair personal computers and peripheral devices; install and configure printers, external drives, and scanners; install packaged software programs; assist in the development of computer applications and processes; operate LANs and WANs. Respond to hardware and software problems, perform remote debugging, provide software error analysis, diagnose problems and ensure repair or replacement of faulty components; test components during installation to meet specifications. Staff information technology help desk as assigned; participate in disaster recovery/business resumption planning where applicable. Maintain security of applications, databases and the network infrastructure; protect confidentiality of data on City systems. Assist in the implementation of computer systems and related projects; make software and systems recommendations to improve efficiency; set up and maintain user and group accounts. Provide technical assistance for development and maintenance of City/department software, online, mobile, AV, and Internet services; assist in budget and procurement processes as needed. Establish positive working relationships with community organizations, agencies, management, staff and the public; may lead interns or temporary staff; perform other related duties as needed. Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Information Technology Specialist I: Associate of Arts degree in computer science, information systems or related field; and one (1) year of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions. OR high school diploma or tested equivalent; and two (2) years of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions. OR high school diploma or tested equivalent; and three (3) years of relevant college-level coursework in computer science, information systems or related field. Information Technology Specialist II: Associate of Arts degree in computer science, information systems or related field; and two (2) years of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions. OR high school diploma or tested equivalent; and three (3) years of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions. Knowledge
Principles and practices of computer systems and network design, operation and control (including VoIP). Imaging and diagnostic hardware utilities and testing equipment; current technology standards; printer installation, maintenance and repair. Methods for record-keeping, documentation, and report writing; proper English, spelling and grammar. Office practices and customer service techniques. Skills
Use hand tools to install, troubleshoot, maintain and repair computers and peripherals; testing equipment. Abilities
Manage multiple tasks and projects; organize, prioritize and follow up on work assignments. Learn City/department terminology and systems needs within six months; execute equipment and software purchasing procedures. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including translating technical information for non-technical audiences. Interact professionally with employees, vendors and the public; maintain a customer service mindset. Read, interpret and record data accurately; troubleshoot information systems, hardware, software, network and connectivity problems; develop appropriate responses. Conduct technical research and recommend solutions; interpret maps, sketches and technical manuals. exercise initiative and independent judgment; lead and train staff and users; work both independently and as part of a team. Stay abreast of emerging technologies relevant to the City or department; adhere to laws and regulations related to information security. Observe safety principles and maintain a safe work environment; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Be able to travel off-site as needed; participate in multi-day training and after-hours work when required. Licenses and Certifications
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C drivers license. Desirable Qualifications
If assigned to SCPL: Experience working in a library. If assigned to City IT: Experience in high-volume Microsoft Help Desk environments; PC replacement programs; virus/malware prevention and resolution; familiarity with Windows Active Directory; relevant certifications (CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+; Windows MCSA; Cisco certifications); SQL Server administration; programming or scripting knowledge.
