Overview

The current vacancy for Information Technology Specialist I/II is in the City's Information and Technology Department. This is a full-time and fully benefitted regular position working 40 hours per week. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill other Information Technology Specialist I/II vacancies in the City IT Department as well as the Santa Cruz Public Library System during the life of the list. The eligibility list established from this recruitment is valid for up to one year from the date established unless the list is extended or abolished by the Human Resources Director. Under supervision, the Information Technology Specialist I/II serves as a technical expert and provides computer hardware, software, peripheral and user support in a networked environment; analyzes, troubleshoots and maintains a complex network infrastructure connecting end-users in both local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN) in a varied environment of operating systems and suites; and performs other related duties as required. Responsibilities

Provide frontline technical support as part of the IT help desk and field support team; be the first point of contact for users experiencing computer, software, and network issues, providing remote assistance and onsite support. Install and configure hardware, troubleshoot desktop and mobile devices, support software applications, and assist users in navigating technology challenges with patience and expertise. Install, upgrade, troubleshoot, and repair personal computers and peripheral devices; configure printers, external drives, scanners; install software programs on workstations; assist users with software usage and learning. Support and operation of LANs and WANs; perform remote and on-site troubleshooting; analyze software errors and reconfigure as needed; ensure repair or replacement of faulty hardware and software. Staff the information technology help desk as assigned and participate in disaster recovery or business resumption planning as needed. Assist in security of applications, databases and network infrastructure; maintain confidentiality of data on City systems. Assist in the implementation of computer systems and related projects; make software and system recommendations to improve efficiency. Set up and maintain user and group accounts; provide technical assistance for development and maintenance of City or department software, online services, and related IT services. Participate in budget and procurement processes as needed and establish positive working relationships with community organizations, agencies, management, staff and the public. May act as lead worker to interns or temporary staff and perform other related duties as part of this classification. Salary

IT Specialist I salary range: $31.90 $44.88 (hourly) IT Specialist II salary range: $35.16 $49.47 (hourly) Qualifications

Education and Experience Information Technology Specialist I Associate of Arts degree in computer science, information systems or related field; and one (1) year of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions OR high school diploma or tested equivalency; and two (2) years of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions OR high school diploma or tested equivalency; and three (3) years of relevant college level coursework in computer science, information systems or related field Information Technology Specialist II Associate of Arts degree in computer science, information systems or related field; and two (2) years of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions OR high school diploma or tested equivalency; and three (3) years of experience performing computer hardware, software and network support functions Knowledge

Principles and practices of computer systems and network design, operation and control (including VoIP). Personal computer imaging and diagnostic hardware utilities and testing equipment. Current technology standards; printer installation, maintenance and repair. Documentation, report writing and English language; office practices and customer service techniques. Skills

Use hand tools to install, troubleshoot, maintain and repair computers and peripherals; testing equipment as needed. Abilities

Manage multiple tasks and projects; organize, prioritize and follow up on work. Learn City/department terminology and systems within six months of hire. Execute purchasing procedures; communicate technical information in non-technical language. Interact effectively with employees, vendors and the public; maintain a customer service mindset. Read, interpret and record data accurately; troubleshoot and resolve information systems, hardware, software and network problems; conduct technical research and recommend solutions. Lead, train staff and users; work independently and in teams; stay current with emerging technologies; adhere to laws and safety practices. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Licenses and Certificates Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C drivers license. Desirable Qualifications

If assigned to SCPL: Experience working in a library. If assigned to City IT: Experience in a high-volume Microsoft Help Desk environment. Experience with PC replacement programs including WIM image format. Experience in preventing/resolving virus and malware infections. Familiarity with Windows Active Directory; CompTIA certifications (A+, Network+, Security+); Windows MCSA; Cisco certifications (CCT, CCENT, CCNA, CCNP); experience or certification in Microsoft SQL Server administration; programming or scripting in two or more languages.
