Position Summary
The School Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the district's transportation services to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable transport of students and staff. This position manages the daily operations of the bus garage and transportation department, including personnel, vehicle maintenance, routing, scheduling, compliance, and customer service. The Transportation Supervisor promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork while maintaining high standards of service to students, families, and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide leadership and direct supervision to transportation staff, including bus drivers, bus aides, mechanics, dispatchers, and administrative support staff. Develop and manage transportation schedules, routes, and assignments to ensure timely and efficient service. Oversee fleet maintenance, inspections, and repairs to ensure all vehicles meet safety and regulatory standards. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation laws, regulations, and district policies. Administer safety training, professional development, and performance evaluations for staff. Monitor and address employee relations, attendance, and performance issues. Manage departmental budget, including fuel, maintenance, payroll, and supplies. Develop and implement emergency response procedures and weather-related contingency plans. Serve as the primary point of contact for transportation concerns from parents, staff, and community members. Collaborate with school administrators and district leadership to support student needs and district initiatives. Maintain accurate records and prepare required reports for compliance, audits, and district leadership. Promote a positive work culture that emphasizes safety, professionalism, and customer service. Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation operations, including supervisory/management experience, preferably in a school or public sector setting. Knowledge of school bus safety standards, state/federal regulations, and fleet maintenance practices. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively and build positive relationships with staff, administrators, and families. Proficient in routing software, scheduling systems, and Microsoft Office applications. CDL with school bus and passenger endorsements preferred (or ability to obtain). Work Environment
Combination of office and field/bus garage environment. Requires flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed. May be required to assist in driving routes.
