Parks Maintenance Ambassador

Act as an ambassador to outdoor parks and the central downtown area. Perform a variety of beautification and maintenance work in park areas and downtown Walla Walla. Provide extensive customer service to citizens and visitors. Promote and assist City sponsored programs and events in public areas. Educate and help enforce public safety rules. Perform essential duties and responsibilities in extreme weather and temperature conditions. General direction and oversight are provided by the Park Maintenance Supervisor; daily oversight by Ground Maintenance Worker III Lead. Essential duties and responsibilities: Employees of the City of Walla Walla are expected to model and foster the City's core values: Service - Integrity - Collaboration - Equity - Leadership - Community Effectively represent the City of Walla Walla. Present a positive, professional image; maintain cooperative and effective working relationships; assure excellent customer service with internal and external customers. Act as an ambassador for park and public space users within the City of Walla Walla; answer questions and provide information of City services, events, and areas of interest. Maintain professional manner and appearance while wearing the provided uniform. Clean and sanitize tables, chairs, and restrooms; pick up litter and empty trash receptacles for City grounds and parks areas; blow, sweep, or clean sidewalks and streets; move tables and chairs as required; inspect and observe amenities in outdoor parks and downtown locations and notify appropriate personnel of safety hazards and repair needs. Perform landscaping and beautification activities around City buildings, parking lots, and other public spaces. Maintain excellent communication with all staff and customers through verbal and written means. Act as ambassador to urban parks and downtown area. Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with a range of partners, area businesses, residents, and visitors. Interact and develop rapport with visitors. Listen to questions, suggestions, and concerns, and share that information with appropriate staff. Recognize and respond to safety and security issues. Notify police and/or emergency services as dictated by the situation. Educate and help enforce public safety rules. Other job functions: Demonstrate punctual, regular, and reliable attendance which is essential for successful job performance. Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people. Basic conflict resolution capabilities, practice good judgement, problem solving, and reason. Able to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations, and in a sometimes fast-paced environment. Ability to be outgoing, positive, friendly, assertive, independent, and self-directed. Ability to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing information and situations by using critical thinking skills and leadership skills. Manage time effectively and prioritize work assignments. Recognize and respond to safety and emergency situations, performing first aid and CPR if necessary. Ability to multitask while being observant of surroundings. Operate a computer and understand the software programs required to enter payroll, use email, enter work orders, and use the Internet. Operate light power and mechanical equipment used in the care and maintenance of downtown sidewalks and streets. Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding. Ability to set-up and take-down program equipment including tables, chairs, umbrellas, stanchions, etc., up to 50lbs. Tools and equipment used: Operate and maintain a variety of equipment and tools as assigned, including hand tools, power tools, and a variety of small gas engines. Physical demands: Sitting and standing for extended periods of time; seeing, hearing, and speaking to exchange information; intermittently stand, walk, kneel, stoop, bend at the waist and lift heavy objects; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment; carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment; perform heavy physical labor at times. Work environment: Outdoor environment: subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work; subject to seasonal weather and adverse weather conditions; dust, dirt, chemical fumes, and pollen; working around moving traffic. Required minimum qualifications: Possess a valid driver's license. Desired qualifications: Bilingual in Spanish.
