Utilities Maintenance Worker
This is manual work involving limited skills in various maintenance and construction tasks throughout the City. Employee performs work of heavy manual nature, which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill; however, as work experience is gained, employees may be assigned to somewhat more difficult tasks of a semiskilled nature. Work is closely supervised and employee receives specific work instructions at the beginning of each new job; however, constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. Work frequently includes the performance of heavy lifting and other strenuous tasks. Work is performed under the immediate direction of the supervisor and/or other delegated authority. Examples of Duties
Essential job functions include: Trimming trees for clearance of overhead utility wires/street lighting and to protect park patrons from injury. Cutting away dead, obstructive, or excess branches from trees and shrubbery. Climbing trees, using ladders; using gas and hydraulic power chain saws and pruning poles, shears, and other cutting implements to remove branches that are broken, dead, or intruding upon probate properties. Removing fallen trees from roadways and park areas; trimming branches to preserve visibility of traffic control devices and to improve landscape appearance. Operating, servicing and maintaining power saws and other machinery and equipment; cleaning equipment; and making minor adjustments to motors. Operating wood chippers and stump grinders. Installing temporary traffic control for safety. Sweeping walks; removing refuse and paper from grounds and buildings. Digging and cleaning ditches and trenches; leveling dirt and asphalt; driving stakes; and breaking up rocks and concrete. Loading and unloading heavy materials and tools from trucks and vans; moving or aiding in moving heavy boxes or equipment and large, bulky objects; and cleaning/washing vehicles. Receiving job training in semi-skilled and skilled trades. Following safe work practices to eliminate & mitigate hazardous conditions & behaviors at the work environment. Promoting a culture of safety within the organization. Performing related work as required. Requirements
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school/vocational school or G.E.D. equivalency diploma. Proof of the highest level of completed education must be submitted as an attachment with application. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.) Experience and training: Basic performance and permanent status as a Maintenance Worker I or Field Maintenance Worker with the City of Sunrise. OR reasonable work experience in Building Maintenance or Public Works (Grounds, Streets, and/or Stormwater) maintenance and/or repair functions. Necessary special qualifications: Must possess a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or higher with an acceptable driving record. (Will be required to maintain license as condition of employment in this position) Ability to operate truck with hydraulic lift, small tractors, skid steers, small rollers, power tools and equipment Ability to perform heavy manual labor Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing as required and monitored by DOT 49 C.F.R. Part 382 Physical requirements and work environment: Tasks are regularly performed outdoors with potential exposure to the following conditions: varying temperatures, inclement weather, and/or other adverse conditions. The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices. Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, golf carts, and manual or power tools. Sufficient physical strength and agility to do heavy manual labor, often under adverse weather conditions. Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements. Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time. Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of power tools and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to laboring work. Ability to operate trucks, small rollers, small tractors, and similar automotive equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Skilled in the use of pole shears, power pole saws, chain saws, low volume sprayers, and other standard tools and equipment of the work. Sufficient physical strength, agility, and freedom from disabling defects to permit climbing and working from considerable heights. Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform heavy manual labor, and occasionally under adverse weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, the general public and City officials.
