About this Job

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.

LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of the Secretary exists to provide leadership and support services, administrative direction, and accountability for departmental programs; administrative direction and leadership to ensure the success of subordinate programs; and department-wide coordination, communication, personnel and basic resources needed to accomplish the department’s mission.

The Communications Officer 1-3 provides technical advice on personal computer-based operations and the operations of the trunked radio system. Completes all necessary forms to maintain proper up-to-date verification of radio assignments. Effectively monitors, diagnoses, and repairs problems that cause radio system, telephone system or computer system failure. Monitors hazardous weather and/or other situations and notifies area agents.

Minimum Qualifications

Six months of experience in transmitting and receiving messages by radio or in administrative services; OR

Six months of training in a business or clerical-related curriculum in a business school or technical institute; OR

Fifteen semester hours of college training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A ll persons appointed to this job will be required by the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Louisiana State Police Terminal Operator Certification Program Guidelines to meet the terminal operator certification/re-certification requirement within six months of employment.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

As a Communications Officer, you will :

Receive and respond to informational requests by officers/agents.

Receive, analyze, prioritize, and respond to general public complaints and inquiries. Alert the nearest officer/agent, dispatch to location, and relay the information.

Search, enter, modify, and delete computerized records for vehicle registrations, driver licenses, other licenses, wanted felons, missing persons, unidentified persons or bodies, stolen property, etc. in the appropriate computer database.

Maintain proper record keeping and update desk log during communications.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type:Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment

Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.

Location: This position is located within theEnforcement Division of the Office of the Secretary, in Baton Rouge, LA.

Compensation: This position is eligible forShift Differential, additional compensation per hour in addition to their normal hourly rate under the following circumstances for each hour worked, provided funding is available.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Communications Officer 1, 2 or 3.
