Overview

POSITION SUMMARY : Performs clinic support in both the clinical and administrative areas. In the clinical area, the practice assistant, under the direction and supervision of a licensed Nurse or Provider, participates in the delivery of patient care in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice. In the administrative area, the practice assistant gathers patient information for registration, schedules appointments, verifies demographic and financial information, and assists in facilitating patient flow throughout the ambulatory setting. Essential Responsibilities / Duties Delivers care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is respectful to patients. Duties include clinical and clerical support as described below.

Clinical Support:

Under the direction of the licensed Nurse or Provider, performs a variety of delegated patient care interventions for patients and their families.

Collaboration and Communication:

Collaborates with the licensed Nurse/clinic manager and interdisciplinary team to determine work assignments and priorities, communicates task status and patient data findings, and maintains timely verbal updates.

Patient Flow:

Monitors waiting room activity, communicates wait times, and informs nursing/technical staff and supervisor of patient arrivals.

Pre-Visit Preparations:

Conducts pre-visit chart review and preparations, identifies patient care needs, and enters orders for labs/tests per clinic guidelines.

Patient Greeting and Rooming:

Greets patients in the waiting room and escorts them to exam rooms.

Documentation:

Uses approved medical terminology and abbreviations in documentation per hospital policy.

Intake Process:

Assists with intake, including verifying identifiers, documenting vital signs, chief complaint, medical/family/social history, allergies, medications, immunization records, and other relevant information; informs provider of readiness and abnormalities; updates patient records.

Procedural Support:

Obtains supplies and sets up equipment for visits; participates in basic procedures under supervision; performs specimen collection and initial processing as appropriate.

Diagnostics and Monitoring:

Collects and records vital signs, performs basic tests and screenings, and attends to wound care and dressing changes with appropriate supervision.

Phlebotomy and Specimens:

Collects, labels, and transports specimens with appropriate requisitions.

Safety and Confidentiality:

Adheres to universal precautions, maintains patient confidentiality, and follows isolation procedures as directed by licensed personnel.

Advanced Clinical Activities (where trained):

May assist with or perform select procedures (e.g., wound care, minor procedures) as training and policy permit.

Clerical Support:

Provides ambulatory services administration including registration, scheduling, co-pay collection, medical records handling, charge coding, and related tasks.

General Duties:

Supports age-appropriate care, participates in staff orientation, adheres to performance standards, and supports hospital mission and RESPECT values.

Advanced Administrative Duties:

Schedules urgent patient evaluations, assists with administrative billing for advanced clinical activity, maintains special procedure lists, and oversees related equipment and inventories.

Other Duties:

Performs additional duties as assigned.

Coordinates breaks with the clinic schedule and fosters a positive work environment.

Works cooperatively with staff; seeks feedback and participates in quality improvement activities.

Maintains required certifications and participates in ongoing education; attends in-services when offered.

Complies with standards and regulations (e.g., safety, infection control); ensures patient rights and confidentiality are upheld.

Job Requirements Education:

Work requires a high school diploma or GED plus at least one of the following:

Successful completion of a medical assistant program; or

Successful completion of the second medical-surgical clinical rotation; or

Equivalent combination of education and healthcare-related work experience.

Experience:

Requires at least two years of previous work experience; experience in a clinical setting is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Must pass clinical competency testing.

English language proficiency (speaking, reading, writing).

Basic math and quantitative skills (e.g., measuring height/weight, urine output).

Excellent customer service and professional communication.

Strong organizational skills and ability to set priorities.

Ability to interpret and use basic medical terminology and abbreviations.

Ability to work independently and follow policies and procedures.

Basic computer proficiency to access and enter data; maintain confidentiality.

Per Diem position requiring a minimum of two shifts per month, typically Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm.
